My period smells rotten

I'm 24 years old and I'm the depo shot I've been on it for 7 years so I rarely get my period (once every 3 months right before I get the injection) but the last three times I got it, it has smelled EXTREMELY rotten. I went off the shot for 3 months right before all this started. I have already been tested for STDs and have a clean bill of health for stds. I only have one sexual partner (sexually active approximately twice a week). The period blood always skips right to brown discharge it is always very light and lasts a week and a half to two weeks. I wonder if it could possibly be because I am on the depo shot and I get my period so rarely so the blood isn't released from my body enough. I know I don't have a tampon, or anything else stuck up there. I am just trying to figure out why this is just starting now when I've been on the shot for 7 years. I have racked my brain the only thing I can think of is the birth control but any other Ideas Are greatly appriciated.

BV is especially noted for being smelly on or around the period, though it is often said to be smelly at other times as well.  My guess would be that you have BV.  For that, see your doctor, there aren't effective home treatments.  Also, your boyfriend should be on the same antibiotic as you at the same time, so he does not inadvertently pass the bacteria back to you.

Hm, I've not heard of depo doing this.  when is your next doctor's appointment (we should all go once a year for a well check)?  This would be a great question for that appointment.  And sincerely, I hope you come back and tell us what they say.  I think of bacterial vaginosis when people talk about rotten smells---  but it would be unusual for you to ONLY have the odor when menstruating.  good luck
