Long period

I have been having a lengthy, light period, and am concerned about it.  I am 44, in good health, and physically active, but am under tons of stress.  My normal periods are quite short--probably about 3 or 4 days, but suddenly this month's cycle (which came about a week late anyway) has gone on for 8 days now.  I know that's not that long, but for me it is.  In the middle of the cycle I had 1 1/2 heavy days, and now the flow is barely there, but does continue.  Is this peri-menopause?  I have never had any unusual pap smears, although the doctor did tell me once I had an retroverted uterus--I do occasionally bleed after sexual activity.
For me to go to the doctor right now is all but impossible, although in a few weeks I could.  So, I would just appreciate any input--hopefully I am unnecessarily concerned, but I would appreciate any guidance any one could offer.  Thanks!

So, what happened. I am experiencing something similar. I am 44yo and have had 5 children, last 2004. I have been having small clots and thin bleeding for over 2 wks. I haven't had one day blood free. It did get heavier for a few days, then lighter again. I usually have heavy bleeding 2-3 days with heavy cramps and then 2 days light and cramp free.
