Ovarian Cysts & Doctors' Refusal to Investigate

Approx. 3 years ago, I took it upon myself to further investigate the dull, aching, pulling sensation I had in my left pelvic region for almost 12 years. Currently 27 years old, I have been diagnosed with ovarian cysts on both ovaries. I recently started going to a new OBGYN, because my previous doctor told me birth control will help with the pain. However, 3 years later & the pain has gotten progressively worse. I can't stand it. Some days I can barely walk it hurts so much. However, a new ultrasound showed that my cysts haven't changed in size. One on the left is 1cm, but is situated in the tuck between the ovary & fallopian tube, the 2 on the right are both 3cm. Upon going to this new doctor, he told me the SAME OLD THING. "They're soft tissue, nothing to worry about. Being so small they shouldn't be causing you so much pain." Why I approached the topic or surgery to remove them, he shot me down completely!! The fact that he says they SHOULDN'T be causing this much pain doesn't defeat the fact that THEY ARE! His solution was to switch my birth control (to one I can't afford, mind you) and prescribe a pain killer. I am not the pill popping type. I hate having to load my body up with meds to function. This new GYNO recommended physical therapy as well as the pain meds. Really? So what I'm supposed to call him to schedule physical therapy after every time I take a roll in the hay and am in extreme pain the following day? I don't think so. Walking is painful, laying on my stomach is painful, bowel movements cause discomfort and pain, sex and even foreplay is extremely painful. At 27, I just want to live a normal life. Not one where I recoil from a man's touch because I know the pain and suffering that will follow.

Has anyone else had issues convincing GYNO's something more needs to be done? I've already had 3 appointments in the last month, I'm afraid my insurance isn't going to pay for additional consults. However, I'm still in pain and I recently started spotting- which has never occurred between my cycle before. If the GYNO's refuse to do more, are there other steps I can take? I've already undergone a colonoscopy because I was having bloody stool, and they found nothing internally. However, my fear is the possibility of endometriosis, which my ultrasound technician said would NOT show on her imaging. Breast Cancer runs in my family and I don't feel as though I should continue letting doctors waste time. 15 years of pain is not normal and being there have been no changes in 3 years to the size of my existing cysts (and because the pain is getting worse), I feel it is time to take more aggressive steps. Am I the only one who has experienced this resistance from physicians? If you struggled with your doctors, how did you finally achieve your desired results?

I've had diagnosed ovarian cysts and by the first time I finally got a diagnosis I am sure I had been having them for over 10 years. I only got my diagnosis after having one rupture at work and being doubled over in pain and being sent to the ER. Birth control pills never helped and I really only started feeling better once I went off them to try and conceive. That may have been chance or not, I have no idea. But I understand your frustration with doctors that never seem to be able to help.

Hello,
Cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can form in the ovaries. They are common in child bearing age.  Mostly they are symptomless But Ovarian cysts can, however, cause problems if they twist, bleed, or rupture. Most ovarian cysts will go away on their own.

One of the most effective treatments for ovarian cysts is use of contraceptive pills or progesterone pills. It can also be treated surgically and this procedure is known as drilling. Other modes of treatment are laparoscopic surgery, laparotomy or surgery for complicated ovarian cysts.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
