Para Gard?

Hi, I am considering using the IUD para gard which is hormone free, and I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with it?  Thanks for any info!

I had my Paragard inserted 2/29/2012 while bleeding. Nurse gaVe me two ibupofens, I felt uncomfortable, but no pain. The first few days I had severe cramping, and a light flow. It seems to go away then return but it is still light. If anything its just annoying. Its been a week and im ready to stop bleeding already. But overall it seems cool so far. im happy to not have experiened things as bad as some of you

I also just had a paragard inserted about a month ago and your experience sounds exactly like mine. I am 28 and have never had kids. I did a lot of research so I also knew that I could expect some pain with insertion, but I never would have expected cramping so bad afterwards. An hour after insertion, I literally thought about returning back to the dr's office to have it removed because I was in so much pain. I probably would have if I hadn't paid so much money for it. The first day, I laid in bed all day in the fetal position with a heating pad. I couldn't eat because when I got up (or even moved) the pain made me feel like I would  pass out. However, I kept checking mine and it didn't come out. It really felt like my body was trying to push it out, though. The cramping subsided a little bit after the first day, but was still pretty bad for about a week.

So here I am one month later, thinking this was a bad decision. I have been continuously bleeding with cramping the entire time. I have an appointment this week for my follow-up and I'm seriously considering just having it removed. It's not worth the pain and misery I'm going through and I can't imagine doing this for months, like some of the other posters on here. Hope this helps you!

I had the Para Gard put in January, 27th of 2012, after much thought and not wanting to use condoms with my husband anymore. I have one child, c-section (never went into labor -it was and emergency c-section).  My husband was very skeptical about the para gard, as I after reading many of these stories and seeing that women have become pregnant with paragard, but using condoms for nearly five years and not getting pregnant I figured why not try it.  I cannot take hormonal bc because of anxiety and depression, and I am clinically over weight- though doctors says I'm healthy.    So this was the only choice for me other than condoms, or outdated diaphragms (who uses those anymore?) I am 33, soon to be thirty four and do have heavy periods my second-fourth day usually and my period normally lasts 5-7 days.  Of course I was worried about extra heavy bleeding after insertion and the months to follow.  but I must say my experience has been good thus far.

Before my appointment which was at 8am, I took 2 Aleeve as a precaution at 6am. I was already on my period since the day before-I went to planned parent hood to have it inserted because my gyno didn't have the para gard, nor would my ins pay for it. So I felt fine, no cramping (but I usually track my periods and take aleeve 1 day or the few days before I start my period).  The procedure did hurt for about 3 seconds, and yes uncomfortable to be on the table bleeding, but I think that is why the pain was so minimal because my cervix was already dilated.  The medical assistant still gave me 2 tylenol right before the procedure (about 9:30am-had to wait a while-but worth it!) too, even though I took the aleeve.

Immediatley after the insertion, I had cramping (medium cramping for me- but I took meds in the am and day before).  I had a dull ache and felt a little faint, but I still went about my day with my daughter.  I was not happy about wearing a pad, but my flow was manageable, in fact not as heavy as it usually was so I didn't even use tampons at all that week because I was worried about getting and infection ( better safe than sorry when an foreign object is inserted into you) or tss- although the doctor did just three days no tampons or anything in the vagina.

It is now february 28th and I'm on my fourth day of my period and have not had to use a tampon only an ultra thin pad because my flow is so minimal. its more clotting, sometimes bright red, but mostly brownish.  I'm sure I'm not pregnant because its definitely a period (like I've had in the past with bc when i was younger).  I did have a weird slimy clear discharge a few weeks ago, the week after insertion and noticed my odor was different.  I just drank more water and wore a panty liner.  now everything seems normal, though my odor is slightly different, not bad, but its definitely different.   Over all I'm happy so far.  we will see what next month brings.  Oh...I can't feel the strings, I tried but I think my fingers are just short...i felt something, but I'm unsure, so when I go to my follow up Ill let the Doctor know.  I hope this helps someone.

I'm 34 years old, do not have children, nor do I want children. I am unable to take birth control pills due to negative side effects (emotional mood swings and dramatic weight gain). I am in a monogamous relationship and after discussing birth control options we decided on an IUD. I did research beforehand and understood that for women who had never had children, insertion would be more uncomfortable, so I was prepared. I scheduled my appointment during my menstrual cycle, also recommended so that your cervix is more open. I had Paragard inserted yesterday at 1:00, I was told it would feel like a sharp pinch during the insertion. It felt as if a sharp instrument was piercing my uterus and it was very uncomfortable. On first attempt my physician was unable to insert the IUD correctly due to my small cervical opening. She then used a dilator tool to widen my cervix, I was not prepared for this and felt even more sharp piercing pain and I felt as if my uterus was coming out of my body. (Let me point out, although I do not have children, I have a strong tolerance for pain and I was able to tolerate the dilation but I believe I got a slight hint at what contractions and labor feel like. No offense to those strong and powerful women who have children.) After the second attempt my physician told me she was still unsure if the IUD was in the correct position and I would need to return in 2 weeks for an ultrasound. I drove myself home and was having intense cramping, worse with sitting. I took 800mg Ibuprofen as soon as I got home and tried to rest but was unable to find a comfortable position. The intense cramping was concerning so I checked for placement and felt the strings just as I was instructed. I began having chills and nausea due to the pain about 2 hours after insertion and the Ibuprofen was not relieving the cramps. At 6:00 I was laying on a heating pad and seriously considering returning to the physician the next day for removal. I also researched online about removing the IUD myself because I felt as if my body was trying to reject a foreign object, I was continuing to have severe cramps and low back pain. At 6:30 something made me check placement again and that is when I felt the entire IUD up against the right side of vaginal wall. I was able to remove it without difficulty and within 30minutes of removal, my cramps had ceased and I felt as if a weight had been lifted. I will not be having another IUD inserted, my boyfriend and I will continue our previous birth control and in a few years I will have a tubal ligation. I just wanted to help those of you who are considering an IUD and have never had children. I know my story may or may not be normal but if I had heard someone else's firsthand experience I would have had more information to base my decision. I hope this may help someone and I wish all of you the best in your decision.
