Recurrent Back and abdominal pain and cramps

I am a 42 yr old woman who has been experiencing odd recurring pains that started 18-20 months ago. It used to seem to start around the time of ovulation but now is really all over the board. I have what starts out as mid to low back cramping and pain which is usually accompanied by what feels like menstrual cramps ( although I have not had a normal full period since last year when I experienced 4 months of severe bleeding only to be followed by only 3-4 days of brownish discharge in the last 12 months) The back pain seems to move to settle in my mid spine area then I get severe bloating, gas and stomach pain.It feels like my internal organs have taken a beating and my best description would be a "bruised" feeling of my entire mid-section.
This pain seems to stay with me for about 2-3 weeks at a time then goes away. Only to return sometimes within days and at the longest 2 months.
My GP sent me for an ultrasound last year which turned up nothing and I am curently having a blood test to check for menopause. This condition is causing me all kinds of stress as I just don't know from day to day how I will be feeling and I seem to get no relief when these bouts occur. I feel very frustrated.
I have high blood pressure and take Atenolol(50mg).I have also experienced off and on tingling and numbness on the left side of my face which also comes and goes.
Any Ideas? Please help...
I am overweight but quite active and I have not made any major chages in my eating or drinking habits.
I have had off/on pain and discomfort in regards to "female" issues since my son's birth 20yr ago

I read your post from 2005 and I have the same condition and no one can tell me what is wrong.  What was the verdict for you?

i had the same thing happening to me, they thought it was endo, or scar tissue. turns out it was a very large uterine fibroid. which unfortunatly leaded to a hysterectomy, but hey i feel great and finally have my life back. but if they give u an ultrasound and they dont see anything, dont worry, they didnt see anything on mine either, and that was done 1 month before my hysterectomy. now i only have 1 ovary left, and i was 28 when i had the surgery and i am 30 now. my prayers are with you. good luck friend

I really don't have much to offer you here. Given the severity and longevity of your symptoms. But I did want to tell you that I also have had pains that I have described to my husband as  feeling as if my insides (namely my uterus) have been beaten up and feel bruised. You are the only other person I've ever heard use the same words to describe it. I attribute mine to ovulation as they do still happen on a regular basis at that time, but it hurts to even sit down or move too suddenly for a couple of days. My check-ups have been fine so I don't worry but maybe ladyheart is onto something about the Endo. Maybe you could bring this up with your doc and see about having the appropriate tests run?
I hope you find your answers soon! Let us know how you're doing please..

I have told my doctor that I have been considering a hysterectomy due to the fact that I just hate all this not knowing what is going on.... it would give me piece of mind I think and I only hope I am right in my feelings that all this is realted to a gynacological problem...
Thanks again for all your kind and helpful words!
