Short Cervix....Need Advise

KDG
Hello,
I unfortunately find myself faced with a dilemma, and I am in need of OBJECTIVE advise b/c my family is driving me crazy!!!  here's the situation...I am 33yrs, and I am 18 wks pregnant with my second child.  My first preganancy (16yrs ago) was perfect. My son was born full term.  The only complication occurred during delivery.  I was in labor(assisted by pitossin-exscuse the spelling) for 12 hrs.  I was only able to dilate 5 cm for this reason,I was given a c-section.  With this pregnancy, I have experienced spotting off and on, threatened miscarriage. Due to spotting and contractions,I was placed on bedrest 3 wks ago.   I have been informed by my doctors that I have a short cervix(28cm).  At this time, I am not taking any meds and I have not had a cerclage. there are  no openings in my cervix, no further spotting or contractions (for three weeks), the baby is doing well.  I have a million questions in my mind but I will only burden you with a few. 1.  If I do not have a history of miscarriage or premature birth, no major procedures or trauma to my cervix, how can my cervix change so drasitically from my first birth?  2.  I have been advised at this time that a cerclage is not required for me but could be used as a precaution; however, the procedure carries a risk of my babies sak being ruptured and as a result, preterm delivery.  Should I get the cerclage?  3.  is there a chance that I can deliver my baby full term in this condition?  I need answers, your prompt responses will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

What was the measurement on your cervix? Did you mean 2.8cm? If the doc doesn't feel any major intervention is necessary, perhaps that may encourage you to relax a little : ) I would simply be mindful of the sign of PTL and use some general precautions such as no heavy lifting or possibly some pelvic rest.

That being said, many women have been in similar situations and gone on to have no restrictions and carried healthy baby to term. I, myself, had no s/s of any issues and went into PTL at 26 weeks with my first. Luckily we stopped it and I carried to term, but it just goes to show that nothing is 100%. Ironically, with my first, I had no prior issues, but I did go on to have cervical surgery after his birth, yet had to be induced with my second child despite the surgery.

Good luck!

Andi

I saw my doc on Tuesday and she told me that I am "funneling," but that the amount of firmly closed cervix is still 2.6 cm, which is acceptable (anything over 2.5 cm is OK with them).  She put me on precautionary limited bedrest and will check again in 2 weeks.  So yours being longer seems like a good thing.
