Fast Heart Beat

I was wondering if anyone has a problem with your heart racing. I'm 28 years old and in March my heart began to beat fast while watching tv.  it was beating 178 bpm. i didn't go to the dr till the next day. my dr sent me to the er and they ran a lot of test and gave me some medicine to bring it down.  i schedule an appt with a heart dr and he did all the blood work, stress, echo and found nothing that was in may.  in july we were visiting some family and my heart again began to race. this time almost 200 bpm and lasted all day.  after this i feel very tired just like i were actually running all day.  i have not been back to the dr about this b/c he said everything was fine and thinks it is just anxiety.  my only concern is that my father had his first heart attack at age 28. he is now 65 and has had 2 open heart surgeries, 9 stents, he also has lupus, asthma, and cad.  please does anyone else have this problem? if so what do you do to solve it and is it serious??

You need to go to another doctor.  There are many reasons that could cause this, but in general the heart will pump harder when it has more work to do...when it needs to get more blood and oxygen to the body.  Try to record factors involved with your episodes.  What time of day it was, what you were doing, any emotional stress at the time, eating habits, weight changes, blood pressure at the time.  Anything from severe potassium or Vit B deficiency to kidney failure to hyperthyroidism can caulse tachycardia.  Meaning it may not be your heart that is the problem, it may be a symptom.  There is a disorder called paroxysmal supra-ventricular tachycardia (PSVT)—a sudden but brief acceleration of the heart at up to 200 beats per minute. Doctors view this type of electrical discharge as mostly bark and no bite. It's easily treatable and non-life-threatening.  Another thing to consider is, if you are female, when it relates to your menstrual cycle.  You could have something like endometriosis and a chocolate cyst bleeding into itself.  This could cause anemia and dehydration very quickly.  Whatever it is, if it makes you feel ill, it is most likely your body giving you a warning sign.  Get a second opinion.

It didn't happen often, maybe once a year.  but it is happening more often.  my heart will just start racing real fast.  now i'm experiencing tightness of my throat when my heart race.  lately my arms starts  hurting.  this is very scary.  i find a quiet place to sit and try my best to be calm.  the attacks are lasting longer also.  I know for a fact that this is not anxiety.  everytime i go to the doctor they find nothing wrong.  i have been experiencing this since i was a teenager and one doctor said then it can't be dangerous, i'm still alive.  He can kiss my ---.  this is very scary and it can't be normal.  but no one seems to know the cure.  heart palpitations, it's lke having a seizure of the heart.  is there anyone that know anything about why your heart can all of a sudden bug out..........

Yes the dr knows the family history b/c he is the same dr my father uses.  I've talked with my father and he said that some of the things I'm explaining sounds like things he has gone thru. I've cut my caffiene and alcohol and try to drink as much water during the day.  I've done everything the dr has asked me to do but there are times when this problem just tries to over take me.  I've learned to deal with it but sometimes I just wonder if there isn't something wrong with my heart.  I've got a strong family history of heart problems. I guess the next time it happens I'll just have to call the dr or go back to the er.  Thanks for all your concerns and helpful replies.

This happens to me all of the time, but only that fast twice, and both times I went to the ER. I was fine! If I were you I would go see another doctor. If they say it is anxiety again, ask to be put on meds like paxil. If this seems to take the syptoms away, than they were probably right, and if not, than maybe further test should be done. Excersicing helps a lot, no alcohol or stimulants such as cafiene or nicotene, don't eat chocolate, limit your sugar intake, drink something hot when you feel a bit paniced, this is calming. I drink calming herbal teas. Get into Yoga, this helps me sooo much. Have a safe place to retreat to, I like watching the burbs, it helps me keep my mind from wandering. Drink lots of water every day, this helps keep your blood flow level. Don't take blood thinners such as I.B. Profin. Try your very best to change your attitude. Being negative, not that you are, but I was, really influences anxiety. I am still trying to change my perception of things. It has really helped me handle stress better. I have had this for 10+ years and am deciding to deal with it without the use of medication. Although I do believe meds help, I think that they cover the problem instead of cure it. I consider my anxiety a part of who I am. I still have episodes, but it is much better now. If you would like to talk, please feel free to email me at ***@****

Have u asked ur dad if he experienced the same thing before his attack? Also maybe (like said above) u didnt mention ur family history? I dont think anxiety would last all day? Maybe try and think what u done those 2 days, like did u have caffine? Or more than usual etc. I definately think see another dr for a second opinion, it could be nothing but it doesnt sound like something to leave....dont feel like o I wont go they said this or that, this is ur health ur heart. Go somewhere else until they give u the right answer. All the best, maybe u could try relaxing things like the lady above, it may help stop it happening again?

Take care

You may have anxiety, especially because of the correlation between your age and the early age of your father's heart attack.  I have an undiagnosed medical condition for 2 years now (have history of early age Cancer) and ever since it has begun, my blood pressure has been higher (especially when I go to the doctor)and I sometimes get heart palpitations.  I also developed a hiatal hernia, which causes chest pressure and heartburn.  I have experienced one panic attack, but have since learned some breathing exercises to control them from coming on.  I would suggest finding a different doctor.  I have also tried acupuncture, which is the most calming experience.  I don't know your eating habits, but diet plays a part in how I feel.  I have to watch the caffiene and try to eat as little processed food as possible.  I also practice yoga, which is wonderful for the mind and body.  My prayers are with you that you find some answers.  Keep us posted.

Did your doctor know about your family history?  Perhaps a second opinion is in order. Your heart rate should not remain that high for that long.

I get a fast heartrate from things with caffiene and sugar.  A caffienated soft drink, like Coke, can really do it.  Maybe yours has a dietary connection?
