Tampon question?

I'm sorry if this is a somewhat gross question.  But I need a bit of advice and somebody to answer my questions!
I've had my period for a couple of years and want to try tampons.  I buy Natracare pads and bought some Natracare  size regular tampons yesterday.  I have no problem getting the tube thingy in there, but I can't seem to push the plunger thingy.  I'm too scared!  I did it once and I was able to feel it so I called up my brother's girlfriend who uses them and asked her if I'm supposed to feel them.  She said no take it out and start all over.  Which I did.  But the problem was it HURT!  I'm guessing it hurt because there wasn't a lot of blood on it.  But now when I try again I can't seem to build up enough courage to push the thingy in.  And to top it all off I felt sorta sorta sick. Like I was on a roller coaster ride.
So I guess my question is this:  Is it really that bad?  Is regular to big a size to start off?  What are the chances of getting TSS?  Can it get stuck up there easily?
Thank you soooo much!
God Bless,
~*Asphyxia*~
P.S. The tampons were cardboard.....

start off with the plastic applicators- just remember not to flush them! go for the smallest ones to start with- and change them as necessary for your flow. don't worry about TSS, it's not as common as the warnings scare you to believe... yes, you will feel it as you're pushing it inside, but you won't feel it the whole time it's in there- the funny feeling only lasts for a bit. if you don't think you're ready to make the switch, then give yourself time.

Okay since you're not used to using tampons, use plastic applicators next time.  when i first started using tampons it felt a little uncomfortable too, i could feel it inside.  but it goes away after you use them for a while.  also don't try pulling it out too ealry because it will hurt because it's dry.  and never leave it in for a long time.

not its not that bad at all your just to scarred to push the applicatior. and your more than likely feeling it beacuse your dry (like if you dont do it right after you pee or something) and that makes it difficult to full go in correctly. i say stick with pads

and no they dont get stuck up their easy

and get plastic tampons if your going to continue using them
