Testing for Cause of Miscarriages

am almost 38 years old.  I had my first pregnancy at age 34.  We conceived on our own right away and I delivered a full term baby girl.  We have been trying to have second child for 2 years.  I had a miscarriage a year ago at 6 weeks.  We began seeing a fertility specialist 4 months after the first miscarriage.  No cause for infertility has been found.  We began Clomid and did two rounds of IUI.  I got pregnant on the second IUI attempt.  I had a second miscarriage in February of this year.  At six weeks, a heartbeat was detected, but at 8 weeks there was no heartbeat.  The baby measured 7 weeks and 3 days.  I had a D&C and the doctor ordered chromosomal testing.  The tests showed that there was no chromosomal abnormality.  Now my doctor wants to do testing for a clotting disorder.  The tests are $1,300 and my insurance won't cover it because they only recommend such testing for recurrent pregnancy loss after 9 weeks and both of my miscarriages have been before 8 weeks.  I'm wondering how likely a clotting problem is with having been able to carry a baby to full term previously and with my miscarriages occuring before 9 weeks?

Thank you for your comments.  I appreciate you sharing your experiences.  I'm glad to hear that someone has had successful pregnancies after several miscarriages.  Sometimes it is easy to lose hope after the heartbreak of miscarriages.

I have the same problem. I have had 2 full term boys (my first boy I had two blood clots in my uterus which could have killed both me and my baby) and in between each baby I had miscarriages. With my second full term baby my doctor decided it would be a good idea to put me on Lovenox and heparin to make sure that the blood clots didn't return. I had to give myself shots every day and after 30 weeks twice a day. I think it all depends on how your body responds. I don't know how many doctors will put you on blood thinners as a precautionary measure like mine did, but it is definitely worth asking before they decide to put you through expensive tests. I also have a friend that lost 2 babies (one 1st trimester and one 2nd trimester) and she is now on the shots too and is having no problem with her pregnancy thus far. I don't think that she had the testing done and they did it as a precautionary length. I hope that you find the answer that you are looking for.
