Tongue piercing?

Does the tongue scar worse than other parts of the body? I (supposedly) have a condition called keloid scarring that makes me develop more scar tissue than others, but from what I've seen that was more of an issue for me before the age of 13. It seems like any wounds I've had after that age heal perfectly when I take good care of them. What concerns me is if I get a lisp that doesnt go away I would take the piercing out for good. If the tongue is a bad place for scarring, my greatest concern is that my tongue would end up with a scar that feels like a knot in it, or something to that degree. I know it's common to get a lisp for a short period of time after a tongue piercing, but I don't want a lisp for the rest of my life.

If I take good care of the wound it should heal well, but in the event that something happens I'm not going to be risky and keep the piercing. I would take the jewelry out immediately. I just need to know how well the tongue heals and scars before I flirt with the idea of actually getting it done. After all, it's not as if I can return my body and get a new one. Thank you for reading my question! I appreciate any input you can give me.

a home piercing party?  you must be pretty brave or have a high pain tolerance!  i wanted to get my ears pierced when i was in 8th grade and my mother said no.  so, one day my older sister said she would do it for me with a darning needle.  i ran outside to ask my mother, who was doing yard work.  she said "sure", apparently thinking i was joking.  then she heard the blood curdling scream coming from the house and realized i wasn't!  my sister wouldn't let me put ice on my ear cuz she said it would just make it hurt more later.  i didn't want to do the second ear, but my mom made me as my punishment lol

the funny thing is it was less painful than the ear piercing! i had pierced my own ear like 10 times when i was young. it hurt like he((. i guess my friends would look for any reason to get together!

DON'T DO IT!!
I have heard that if they pierce the wrong spot, it can paralyse your tongue. That means you get to talk like you're a lobotomy victim for the rest of your life. Is that worth it?

Besides, nothing says "lesbian stripper" more than a tongue piercing (which, I guess, if that is the look you're going for is not necessarily a bad thing).

That's all true. There are nerves in your tongue that if you puncture it actually renders your tongue dead. Also, there are nerves that the barbell can rub on that can (supposedly) cause horrible shooting pains in your face that are linked to some "suicide disease". From what I understand this is all extremely rare. That is why you never ever do it yourself, and only get it done by a professional piercer with a clean shop and a good reputation. Like I said before, this is the only body I'm ever going to have.

The thing with the teeth chipping/breaking happens mostly from people who play with the jewelry and make it click against their teeth alot. I suppose it also might have something to do with how well you've taken care of your teeth. If your teeth aren't up to par to begin with you likely would break teeth. Kinda common sense with the teeth thing. Might happen in my sleep but other than that I'm not very concerned.

They pierce it with a hollow tipped needle (as all piercings should be done. from my understanding) because if you just shove a piece of jewelry through your body it will be more likely to reject it. Without a hollow tipped needle, the skin would look like an "eruption" on the side the jewelry exited.

I'm really only concerned with scarring, I had my ears done for the first time since I ripped them out when I was a baby, no scarring at all, they look very healthy now 6 weeks later. I think I scarred so badly in the past because I had no self control and I picked scabs and scratched alot which left red, raised scars.

I'd just like to know if the tongue is more likely to scar than other body parts. Sort of like how a wound on the face bleeds WAY more than a wound anywhere else. What about scarring? By the way, I'm 18 :)

first the tooth chipping happens mostly in chewing your food. it can happen to the healthiest of teeth. im happy to see you have done your research.
second. mrs canada wow you are judgmental. lesbian stripper huh? sometimes we have to be able to look outside our tiny little box and learn to not be so harsh. i suppose you were just offering advice with that huh? naw, it was labeling which i dont think is very appreciative to happy flower.

Howdy,
I have some piercings and things, not my tongue though.  I also tend to heal with keloids, and I have one next to the top part of my navel piercing.
My best advice to you would be to call the piercing place and ask their opinion.
I have a couple of friends with their tongues pierced and you couldn't tell unless you saw their tongue that it's peirced, no chipped teeth, lisps...However as a speech pathology student I wouldn't recommend it =) There are lots of things that could go wrong, and my one friend who has his pierced had to take it out and get it re-pierced, because the first person pierced it crooked.  Best of luck!

i see lol. well first of all the tounge is a place where piercings can go very wrong. hopefully they pierce the right spot. and you keep it clean enough to not get an infection. and the bar seems to break many many teeth while eating. i worked in a dental office and i too thought about getting a piercing. but after the nasty things i saw i realiezed it was not worth it. studies are being done to correlate facial piercings with head pain. if you are prone to scarring i suggest you dont do it. get a tattoo instead. besides, piercings are so last year lol. good luck hope you REALLY consider the pros and cons.

Thank you! The tooth chipping/breaking was also a small concern for me. I had considered a tattoo, but I'd rather wait til I'm a little older for one because I can't think of anything I would like to permanently do to my body at this point. Piercings can be taken out at any time, and thats a huge pro in my book. I had though I would try geting my belly button done first to see how that scars. I guess it would be a waste if the tongue scars worse than other parts of the body. Anyone know if it develops more scar tissue?

If i were you i would start with something a bit more simple if you are worried about scarring and healing. like a second hole in your ear?

I made the mistake of getting my belly button pierced and it never healed. i had it for two years and finally gave up because it bothered me so much. Now i have a very wierd scar and what feels like a hard lump under my skin where the earing was.

I also had several ear piercings that did the same thing and i have very bad scarring.

i have heard the tongue is very painful; the bar is also very large, so they dont just stick a needle in your tongue, they actually remove a chunk of it! my friend had it done and it freaked her out that the needle was hollow!

i have seen the scarring on the tongue and there is a consideral sized "bump".here is my piercing story if it helps. about 13 years ago i pierced my belly button. did it at the fair with a stupid ear piercing gun. wrong i know. my body rejected it and after a year or 2 my body pushed it out. big scar. then i decided to do it again the right way at a home piercing party. it didnt heal after quite some time so i took it out. big ugly scar. than a couple of years ago i pierced my nose. was cute as can be, but never healed. one night the stud got stuck on my pillow case and when i rolled over OUCH. the next morning i tried to put it back in but it started to close already. its been out for over a year and is still sore on the inside of my nose. and i have a little scar. i know how fun it seems to do, and not everyone has problems. its something to definatly think about. when you pierce the tongue you talk like an idiot for several days haha. your tongue swells and you have a lisp . that should go away. how old are you? you mentioned the tattoo and your body changing? i got my tats 10-15 years ago and they still look good even through weight gain and pregnancy. maybe just color your hair pink and that be your signature!

i'm assuming some people have more of a tendency to scar than others.  i'm feeling very left out since i've never had a tongue piercing.  just my ears (:  i may have to buy a pole and begin  pole dancing though.  i hear paris hilton has a pole in her house and does pole dancing for exercise and it's done wonders to keep her skinny.  or is that a lack of food?

you have to live on a strict diet of cocktails, brawling with nicole ritchie , and pole dancing. its hard work but when you are done you have no boobs or booty!
