US says I am preg, blood test says no???

OK, have long hx of fertility issues.  I have been pregnant once in 16 years.  I am 40 and have had very heavy periods for about 6 months.  So, my Dr. ordered an ultrasound to rule out fibroids.  The ultrasound showed 2 gestational sacs, measuring in at 5 weeks, with the accompaning corpeus luteal cyst on my left ovary.  SHOCK doesn't cover what I was feeling at that news.  My blood HCG levels are negative (less than 1). I had 2 drawn, both with same results.   So.... what????  I had a period 5 weeks ago which was normal.  The ultrasound was comfirmed by 2 different radiologists.  There was no other suggestion for what this could be.  My dr. suggested blighted ovum, but all reading I have done regarding this states the HCG would still be positive.  What is going on????  I have no symptoms of pregnancy at all, except that now my period is about a week late.  Any ideas???

Thanks for the info!!!  I have an appt. next Tues and will post what I find out.  I did ask about clots, polyps, cysts, or tumors when I spoke to the radiologist that was reading my ultrasound.  He said it didn't look like any of those things on the ultrasound.  I guess I will just have to wait and see.

It must be something that looks like gestational sacs...some sort of cyst?

I looked up pseudosacs (gestational-appearing sacs often found in ectopic pregnancies), and found a lot of info about pregnancy, including an eMedicine article containing this quote:  "Although beta-HCG levels and their rate of increase may vary with ectopic pregnancies, a negative beta-HCG result effectively excludes the diagnosis of intra or extrauterine pregnancy."

I'm wondering if this could be clots in your uterus, relating to your heavy bleeding, or something similar, like uterine polyps?

Please keep us posted when you go to the gyn.

Radiologist said it was to early to "see anything" in the sacs at this point and recommended a repeat ultrasound if a few weeks.  He did say that it looked like I was pregnant though and how things should look at this stage of the game.  Even the tissue around the sacs were "consistant with pregnancy".  Of course, that was before the neg Hcg test.  My dr. has referred me to a GYN, so I guess we shall see.  Weird though.

So they saw sacs, but the sacs were empty?  I'm guessing missed miscarriage or it's extra tissue or something that looks like a sac.

How bizarre. You're right- even with a blighted ovum, your body produces hcg, so I'm stumped. Maybe a missed miscarriage? What does your doctor plan to do next?
