Why can't I stop dreaming?!

Here is some history: I'm 24, I have Anxiety/Panic disorder. I have been taking Effexor XR since April, and it seems to help with my symptoms. I also take Xanax as needed for panic attacks. This also helps. However, I have not been able to have one night's sleep without dreaming in 8 months! I told my psychiatrist, and she prescribed Ambian, which helped me fall asleep fast, but I still had dreams all night. Then she suggested taking the Xanax every night, starting with .5 mg. When that didn't work, she told me to try 2. Nothing helps. I dream all night long. Nightmares, stupid dreams, ex-boyfriend dreams, vacation dreams, high school dreams, etc. All freakin' night! I wake up in the morning feeling like my brain hasn't rested! It is getting really annoying. This happened to me a few years back when I was first diagnosed with Anxiety/Panic disorder. But it went away after about a month. This has been 8 months now!!! Does ANYONE out there know what is causing this and if there is some kind of medication out there that would help this?

There is only one sure fire solution to stop dreaming. Marijuana will definitely stop those dreams! It has always worked for me. Unfortunately, my work place has recently instituted random drug testing and I have had to quit my nightly smoke. My dreams are back - vivid and nightmarish. I am thinking about changing jobs because I'm not sure I can take these stupid dreams anymore. I feel marijuana is a much more natural solution to this problem than all these medications you are all taking. Look into it and good luck.

did you consider that maybe it's the copious amounts of drugs you're taking? your doctor and psychiatrist are not very responsible people.

There is no alternative to seeing your doctor. Ou have a list of symptoms that need treatment. Ask for a recommendation for a psychiatrist. They will able to get you the right meds.  You should get a therapist too. It seems like a lot of work and a big step to take but it's just what you need to do to get better. And you do want to get better don't you?

The best solution that works for me every time to prevent the detailed and excessive dreaming - is to be creative.   Many of us go through our daily routine and never use the part of our brain that allows us to think up thinks and provide solutions.  So at night, our brain does it for us.  Take up a hobby - paint, take pictures, sew, fix the leaky faucet, write a poem...  What ever it takes to make you mind work differently then normal.  I find the less creative I am, the more I dream and I am exhausted!  Give it a try.
