I was on a course of Penicillin for Strep throat.  I was worried I would get a yeast infection, so I used an over the counter one dose Monistat cure to prevent a yeast overgrowth.  I used the treatment three days ago and I am now in a lot of discomfort.  Will things adjust on their own, or should I see a doctor?

I get a yeast infection every time i take antibiotic. I also am being treated currently for strep throat, and of course, my yeast infection showed up yesterday. I tried monistat for the first infection after using antibiotic, however after I looked for all natural remedies. I eat PLAIN yogurt daily, and you use PLAIN all natural yogurt in the vulva and vaginal area to regulate the balance and that fixes it all right up in 3-5 days. I use this method every time, and it always fixes my problem - the all natural way. i suggest you google natural yeast infection remedies for details on WHY yogurt cures the infection, and details on how to use the yogurt [i didn't feel like typing details here]
good luck!

Also, it's never a good idea to use monistat BEFORE your infection actually arrives [for laura michelle]. only use that stuff when you are sure you HAVE the infection.

I am going through some issues right now with a yeast infection myself and I chose to use Monistat 3.  On the second day I was in horrible pain and I stopped taking it.  On the back of the box it does state that the symptoms may get worse before they get better, but I also read that Monistat just isn't the right choice for every woman (especially Monistat 1 and 3, most doctor's will recommend that you use Monistat 7).  I am going to my doctor to see what I can do about my situation and I suggest you do the same. Your doctor may just say that you have to wait it out and that's it but you should go anyway just to make sure.   Also, never try to treat yourself for symptoms you don't even have yet (I learned that the hard way).  Remember, medicines for treatment and prevention work differently.  If you have something you can't use a preventive method because you already have whatever it is you have so it needs to be treated and, vice versa, you can't use a treatment method to try and cure something you don't even have yet.  That is what Monistat is, a treatment drug, not a prevention drug.  While you are waiting to see your doctor, I would drink plenty of water to try and help flush as much of the cream out of your system as possible.  Good luck to you.
