Yes, it does tend to lessen your cramps, which is why people with bad periods will get on birth control to help with that.  It does this because birth control thins the uterine lining.  My period went from 7 days with heavy bleeding, debilitating cramps and nausea and lower back pain as well as clots, to 3 days with light to moderate bleeding, few clots, and I can actually function.  I've been on my pill 6 years, but I'm thinking it may be time to change up because they're starting to go back to how they were.

I didn't have any real side effects personally, but there definitely are some.  Depending on the pill type, you can gain weight, get bigger breasts (or smaller breasts), etc. as a side effect.  People with auras accompanying their migraines are advised against certain types.  Definitely do not want to smoke while on birth control due to this increasing the risk of blood clots, which is already there to a small degree without adding smoking into the equation.  Some people do experience emotional issues due to the fact they are taking hormones and have to try several pills to find one that works well for them without that side effect.  Just Google "Birth control side effects" and you can get a fairly comprehensive idea of the possible side effects.

You'll also want to be aware that when you are on birth control, you do experience monthly bleeding due to the withdrawal of hormones on that last week of the pill pack.  Since the bleeding is in response to the suddenly stopped hormone intake, you can experience what is called breakthrough bleeding if you are late taking your pill or miss one or two pills.  Your body might be like mine usually is where you have to miss a couple before you have it or it could be so sensitive that even missing by just an hour can throw you out of whack.  I set a cell phone alarm to go off at the same time daily and keep my pills with me to avoid missing one.
