No period for four months!

Hi!
I'm 25 and have been on the pill for about 6 years before that my period was very irregular usually about two months between periods, 5 months ago I started working in a foreign country and after 1 month stopped taking the pill but my period didn't come! This has never happened to me before and now it's been four months and I'm getting worried, I think maybe it is from the stress and changes from living in a new country plus I have been exercising quite a bit to get fit and the diet is completely different but very healthy.
I feel fine and seem to be healthy in every other way and there's no abnormal discharges or pain or anything.
It is a real pain trying to find a doctor that speaks reasonable english and frankly I'm a little worried about seeing a doctor about something like this.
Could it be something serious?
How long can I wait before I have to find a doctor?
Thanks very much for your help I suppose this is one of the challenges of living overseas :)

Wow...i am so happy to read all this coz i was getting really worried about my body. i am 26,27 next month. i stopped taking the pill last year in november and i had been on it for 5 years. i had a misscarriage just before i started taking the pill. now my hubby and i are trying for a baby andi keep thinking that it was a mistake to take the pill after a miscarriage.
i haven my period since december. my last period was on 24 dec. i am so anxious coz i have done 4 tests, all were negative, one blood test, it was negative, ultrasound scan, and nothing. but i'm pretty much stressed at work. im now stressed about not having a period too. i habe alot of the pregnancy symptoms, but nothing there. i'm lactating, my nipples are very painful...its been two weeks with sore nipples. my breasts have grown and they are heavy, i've gained alot of weight, i feel a little crampy in my lower abdomin(i sometimes felt like that just befor my period came) but its not coming. i did a test yesterday a there was the control line and a very very faint test line, i did another one this mornnig, and it was negative.
its all so confusing. but i figured, as long as im not having my period, im not gonna fall pregnant..so right now all i want, is to have my period.
i dont know if im able to get anything from the gynea as i am in africa..so you can imagine how tough it may be for me. i also think im starting to get a bold patch and im suspecting that is a result of the stress, so i am more stressed out about that too.
please help.

I had the same problem. I stopped taking the pill after about 2 years and with that my period stopped too. I kept thinking that i was pregnant because i was lactating and having other symptoms of pregnancy. but i finally went to my doctor and he laughed and said that it was something to do with not taking the pill anymore and that its totally normal for most women. It may take awhile but it will come back. I finally just got mine yesterday after not having it since February.

have you taken a test? I was told last time (when I was on ortho tri cyclen then moved to Zovia) that if you miss two months of periods you should test... because one month on the pill was pretty normal, but not two

"I'm in the states and it's hard to find one in my town that I can understand his english."

-Ain't THAT the truth!

When are you coming back to the states?  Is there any possibilty at all of pregnancy?  I wish I had some ideas for you.  If you have health care insurance in the states and are in a large country, they may have some sort of contact for overseas health emergencies.  I'm totally guessing, though.

It could be just that you are not ovulating after stopping the pill.

What country?

I ahve never taken birth controll pills, but I have always heard that it takes a while for your period to come back. Also, dieting and working out a lot will also cause you to be late. Stress will cause it too. Sounds like you have all the factors that cause you to be late all in one. I would wait another month then  if still nothing, i'd find a doctor. I know what you mean about finding a doctor that speaks english. I'm in the states and it's hard to find one in my town that I can understand his english. That doesn't mean he doesn't know what he's talking about. Good luck!

This could be happening due to a lot of factors...many that you mentioned in your post.  Stress can do a lot of things to your body, and it sounds like you have a bit of that!!  Due to the fact that you were on the pill for a while and now not, your hormones are probably adjusting accordingly - which could take some time.  You also say that you're exercising a lot, and from what I've read, this can have an effect as well.  Are you underweight?  I quit having periods when I was too thin, for over 6 months.  If you're feeling fine and there is no chance that you're pregnant, I would wait a couple more months and see if it arrives.  If not, it would probably be best that you find an OB/GYN and get a check up - just to ease your mind.
