strange period - bleeding for a month straight

hi everyone, after weeks of trying to find what exactly is wrong with me i decided to post a question and see if there are any other women going through this and most importantly those who did what helped them. to start of with my period started on the 11th of August, and it's been almost 5 weeks now. it started of unusually. spotting for day and a half and then on the 13th of aug i had very heavy bleeding for a few hours with a large clot flashing out of me, the size of a golfball. after that the period continued as normal, no pain, no cramps. my periods usually last a week, bleeding 4-5 days and then maybe day or two of spotting to finish. when that period was supposed to be over a little bit of bleeding continued. it was either pink or brown, didn't look like period and was so light that I didn't even need a tampon. this continued, and it felt like any day now it would finally stop, but no eventhough it was very light and only lasted for a couple of hours a day it never really stopped for more than 12 hrs... after i was still bleeding for 3 weeks i went to see my gp. they thought it could be 3 options, miscarriage, infection, or hormonal imbalance. i had various blood tests, swab test, and ultrasound done. the first two were off the list. so they think it might have something to do with my hormones going crazy. i did have a very stressful time when it all happened, so it's very likely. i am still waiting back on my hormone blood results, to check for thyroid and polycyclic ovarian syndrome. i should probably also mention that i am 28 years old, haven't had children yet, am not on birth control, and that my periods always were very regular, and this is the first time anything like this happened to me, which is why it is a little scary. meanwhile i have been feeling tiered and dizzy, my iron did show as slightly less than normal, but my gp for some reason didn;t see the need in putting me on iron tablets yet, i had to have more blood test done to look into my iron level, which also hasn't come back yet. meanwhile my next period was supposed to start on the 8th... around the 30/31st of august i started to bleed a bit more for about a week, and then on the 6th it started to bleed pretty heavy, since then i have been bleeding with red blood, heavily, i'd say slightly heavier than usually during my periods.. and with many clots again... even if that was my second period i should not be bleeding so heavily still, and during the last week I started to have very strong cramps. it's annoying that they can't find anything specific. after the results will come back my gp wants to put me on some pills to help with balancing out my hormones, but I really would rather like a natural way, maybe herb based medicine, homoeopathy. i am not a big fan of putting chemicals into my body. when i was 16 i went on birth control pills for about a year, that messed up my hormones so badly when i came of them that it took me a good few years to get back on track. i will let you know as soon as i'll find out more. meanwhile i am taking multi vitamins, and omega 3 pills that i picked up at some health food shop, waiting for you gp to prescribe smth is pointless, unless it;s some useless crap like those tablets she prescribed at the beginning to help me stop bleeding, it never worked only gave me terrible side effects... anyhow, tomorrow i have my next appointment with my gp, and i will push hard to be referred to a specialist aka gyno, bcs sofar she thought there was no need in that, but now that my bleeding is heavy combined with cramps i am afraid she will have to!

so was at the gp, and the hormone blood results came back too! all hormones are absolutely within norm, every single one!! this is insane. my gp says it's a puzzle. they have no idea ahy the bleeding is not stopping. it has reduced by now, but still going on. i am taking iron tablets now, because my iron level dropped massively, which of course will happen if you bleed for so long. i am taking a bunch of vitamins, omega 3, royal jelly, and started to exercise again, plenty of walking nothing to crazy... hopping that all of this will make my body get back to normal.

my gp referred me to gyno for further investigation, and the soonest appointment can take upto 2-3 weeks! i really would love to find out what the hack is going on there. i guess i'm happy that my hormones are in good shape, but what else could it be then. anyways i will keep posted.

and good luck with with getting prego! :) xx

Usually if your not trying to conceive, your doctor will put you on birth control pills to help regulate your hormones, thats what I did first but since now I'm ttc I cant take those anymore...

Fertility wise, yes, it could affect your ovulation & you might have to use ovulation induction pills like clomid to help you ovulate, which is what I'm doing right now...

thanks Kendy! i had an ultrasound done, everything within a norm. but i am now nervously waiting for the remaining blood results to come back, to see if it's polycystic ovaries syndrome.

if you don't mind me asking - after you were diagnosed with PCOS, did the treatment work? and what was the treatment? and fertility wise, does it affect it?

all the best!

I had the same issue, I was bleeding for 2 months straight up, & the only way I was able to stop it was with BC pills but as soon as I stopped taking them it would start again the next day... Ask your OB/GYN for a pelvic ultrasound and check ur ovaries, make sure you don't have PCOS, because that's what I was diagnosed with!

Good Luck!
