Glad to here of some improvements now that you are getting into range. If it were me, I wouldn't stop yet either. It is sad that doctors are not willing to say "I don't know." more often. Some will accept information from the web, others have no inclination to. Keep up the good work.
I'm thrilled to hear your tolerating the split doses of vitamin D so well. The doctors cannot give any answers regarding vitamin D; I think it hasn't been around long enough for them to understand the dosage titration issues. I also think that because big pharma can't make money off of vitamin D supplementation information --- proper clinical trials will never be done to firmly establish dosage, benefits, risks. Right now my neuro and I are doing an informal experiment with me as the subject since he's intrigued by my improvement since starting supplementation and admits to knowing little about D and being somewhat skeptical. I also know that my thyroid specialist said it was very important for me to work on getting my Vitamin D levels up. I'd like to tan but can't due to skin issues (I'm extremely fair and have never been able to tan, only blister).
I'm really glad that our excellent cod liver oil has helped you so much! :) Sounds great!
Hey everyone, thanks for the supportive messages!!
Phyllis2010, following your example, I started splitting my 2000 units of D gel cap doses into morning and evening doses. I do tolerate them better that way!! If I were to take them together in the evening, I would likely continue to experience numbness in my hands and arms at night - which prior D supplementation (all at one time) has often caused me. The doctors can't give me an answer as to why this happens - they have simply informed me that vitamin D absolutely cannot cause such a reaction (and yet it has for me). When are the doctors going to figure out that we seniors need downward-adjusted doses - not 50,000 units of D all at once???
I'm really enjoying my tanning bed experience with the UVB rays (even though it is only for 6 minutes). My symptoms usually worsen somewhat after tanning, but I don't care. If what I have is a terminal condition, I might as well enjoy the time I have left here now!! I feel good while I am tanning and I like knowing I'm getting more D that way!!
Gagetsmidnight, my endocrinologist congratulated me on my getting my D into the 30s and said I could cut back on supplementation and relax now - but I was the one who wanted my D to go into the higher numbers!! I'd like it to be in the 60s.
9na, glad to hear from you all the way from Norway and hope your D levels will soon be in the safe range. As a note of thanks, it was the Radiant Life Premier Quantum Norwegian Cod Liver Oil that I feel really helped me get my D up to normal levels. It doesn't seem to offer enough D (one-half teaspoon is only 625 of D). But when I told the Radiant Life people about my D deficiency, they were confident that their Quantum Norwegian Cold Liver Oil would suffice! That is because it is very high-quality oil from Norway that is well-absorbed. For a while I took actually a full teaspoonful of it - but didn't want as much A as it offered, so I had to eventually cut back to half a teaspoonful. The Radiant Life people were right!!! It brought my D up!
So my thanks and regards to Norway for its pristine waters and D-elevating cod liver oil!!
Hey, best to you -- I hope the New Year brings you a normal vitamin D level. I did not respond well to mega doses and, yes, you can do just fine without them -- just get vitamin D3 in gel cap form and take it with a fat. I divide my 4400 IU dose -- 2 caps with breakfast, 1 with lunch, and 1 with dinner!!!!
That's great news! I'm so glad to see that you're all improving! :) Not only is it good for you, but it also gives hope for those of us who have recently started treatment :)
Here in Norway noone gets 'mega-doses', so I'm glad to hear that the levels can improve fast without them.
I really hope you'll all experience complete recovery soon :)
Good to hear from you!!! And, congrats on hitting the 30s. As of October 15th my vitamin D levels also entered the normal range at 30.6 WITHOUT mega dosing. I simple took D3 gel caps 3400 IUs per day (and currently take 4400 IUs per day). (I'm a senior and had had real problems with mega dosing). Like Gadgets, I too have had major improvements in symptoms but I'm still not 100%. I don't know whether it's the vitamin D or my back improving or I'm in some sort of remission (as in relapse/remit) but my bladder/bowel have returned to normal, my walking has improved and I sleep beautifully sometimes 7 hours at a stretch at night. I'm still not 100% and in terms of a diagnosis I'm still in limbo (and may always be). Weakandfalling I hope your symptoms improve and that you start feeling better, particularly with the holidays coming....FP
I glad you have moved your numbers up. My Endocrinologist is wanting mine to be in the 60's, even though normal in above 30. I have had major improvements in my symptoms, but I am still not 100%. From the studies I have read it can take 12 months or more of maintaining a good level to feel "back to normal" whatever that is. Keep up the good work. I am glad that your treatment choices worked out for you.
