lump behind the left ear

My son is 3 and a half. I took him to the dr four days ago because he was having an on-going but not frequent cough and also because he had some rashes on his skin.  The dr gave him some antibiotics for a slight inflamed ear infection.  Two nights ago, I noticed that there was a little lump behind his left ear.  Sometimes it feels hard, but sometimes it feels a little more tender.  He has another lump larger on his neck but this is softand moveable and has been there for a long time.  I just noticed the one behind the ear and it has me concerned.  Can someone tell me if I should be concerned.  One thing I should note is that my son is always on med for allergies.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
The lump behind the ear and on the neck which you have described sounds like a swollen lymph node. Lymphadenopathy (swollen lymph nodes) is usually caused by a viral or bacterial infection and in your child’s case it can be due to the ear infection which resulted in swollen behind the ear and neck lymph nodes.
Apply warm compresses and follow up the doctor for the drugs he has been prescribed. These lymph nodes should regress in size once the infection is gone.

If the symptoms persist then get an evaluation done from a pediatrician.
It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.

Chrissy745,

As I was reading your post I started thinking "allergies" then when I read your final sentence confirming he has allergies, I knew! I would always recommend bringing it to your Dr.'s attention, however... My daughter (she is 5) had the same thing about a yr ago and it scared the daylights out of me!!!  Her Dr told me that they are common for children with allergies. My daughter had hers in the same spots.. One behind her ear, and one on her neck that I would only see when she would move a certain way while I was doing her hair. I went to the Dr right away (b/c for me personally, I always associate lump with cancer) and was so relieved when he told me this!... I hope this helps.

My son had a lump behind his ear (he's 30 )  but it still scared me.  After taking all the meds from a Dr and still there he finally went to a Dentist and lump was caused from a tooth. Dentist gave him more meds treated the tooth and lump went away.  You might want to get it checked out just to be sure it not from a tooth.
