How low do I need to be in terms of blood sugars before I treat?

I have been experiencing low blood sugars (sometime as low as 1.5 mmol/L) and I’m newly diagnosed and I have been treating every low blood sugar (under 3.9 mmol/L) and sometimes going the other way and becoming high (sometimes as high as 26.2 mmol/L) so I wanted to know how low I have to be before I treat and do I need to give insulin for the second part of the treatment.  My treatment is 5 large jelly babies and 3 biscuits or cookies.  I wasn’t told how low I had to be before I treat.

Hi,

The guide that you were given, to  treat a low that is less than 3.9 is appropriate.
What you need to work out now is how much glucose you would need to raise yourself from a low.

You need to work out how much 1 g  of glucose will raise you.

For example, if you are 3.9 and you want to target blood sugar of 4.7, then you need to see how much glucose will raise you.

To rise from 3.9 to 4.7 (0.8 ) you may only need say 3 g of sugar.  This is 3 jelly beans.   It is important to treat, but it is also important not to overtreat.

I hope this helps you.
