Hi Friends,
Thanks for your comments. We, as a group of teachers did went through our teachers observation check list. Then after that, we refer her to the professional. how I wish it is a misdiagnose, but it is not.
Hi Sam,
In Singapore preschool, teachers avoid giving sweets and chocolates. Reason being, if the child happens to have cough or anything, teachers will often be the one getting all the blames. It's kind of hard been a teacher these days, oh boy! By the way, this child is physically healthy but just having mild cognitive delay. Teachers are working closely to try to enhance her intellectual development.
Hi Natta,
I noticed preschool in your area and some other countries in more relax.
In the Singapore context, parents are just sooooooo super nervous about their academic results. But preschool teachers here, been train in child development, we often try our best to give children fun things to do, rather than worksheets, worksheets, worksheets. Yuck! If i'm a child, i'll be so sick of doing all those worksheets.Unfortunately alot of parents will grumble and complain to our principal, if on that day we let children do lesser worksheets. I really pity the children these days.
They are not even in primary school, and yet they are given so much academic stuff to do. That is why, i always joke and play a lot with them during their playtime.
I would not worry about math at 5.....
See - where I come from - they do not expect you to read or write when you start school (7 y.o) Then here comes physics and chemistry in 5th grade:) We did US college level algebra in a first year of high school...
I went to US college, never paid for anything due to merit scholarships, graduated with Summa *** Laude and did ot really have to study as much as others did....For some reason, they start children early here, but then it dies down. 5 year olds' inability to do math is not a learning disability...Oh, and with multiplication, we've started it in 3rd grade:)
What kind of math are you talking about? Recognizing numbers? counting things (1-5)?
Is she bilingual by any chance. Quite often there are some misdiagnosis in that department. Also was it a medical doctor or a psychologist who diagnosed the child? Do you know if she was a blue baby?
Also what concepts are you trying to teach? When I was five I was learning multiplication... My whole class was actually so it can be done.
Umm have you tried small pouches of m&Ms?
