Infected from a needle???

So I was reading about this: http://www.ajph.org/cgi/reprint/91/4/636.pdf   (please read) and apparently re-use of needles does happen in hospitals/testing sites in the US. Although not often I guess it does happen...

Now the other day I went to go get blood drawn for my HIV test, I was worried that being in a HIV clinic with high risk people (San Francisco) that the possibility of accidentally having a used needle is higher...

the needle they used on me was a butterfly needle like this: http://blog.thesmithlife.com/solumedrol_iv/butterfly_needle.png

now I do remember her ripping it out of the package and then using it, considering that there is no way it was re-used right?? i have too much anxiety i have these grander thoughts that the needle was re-used or some evil person infected it before it was sent there... am I at any risk?

I realise the distinction between OCD and other anxiety disorders. I have a degree in psychology and have investigated different treatments for my own OCD and other anxiety disorders/depression.

I understand what "Cognitive Behavioural Therapy" is and have both studied it's use and used it, with great success, myself. In regards to discovering the 'origin' of someone's irrational fears, I've found that it is almost impossible to say with any certainty where one's fears originated in most cases and feel it is more practical to seek to overcome the undesired thoughts and behaviours (unless, of course, one is in an environment which is obviously conducive to these thoughts and behaviours).

Anyway, I'm not trying to 'diagnose' anyone or treat anyone on a message board. What the poster described appeared to be the product of cognitive distortions and, in my experience, I've found "Cognitive Therapy" specifically (although I wrote 'cognitive behavioural therapy') to be the most effective at overcoming these thoughts, specifically through the use of thought challenging exercises.

Yours sincerely,

Janitor.

Janitor,
Please understand,  OCD, anxiety disorders, etc. are separate and distinct morbidities, therefore requiring quite separate and distinct modalities of treatment.

Please keep in mind that "Cognitive Behavioral Therapy" is an umbrella term used define a mode of treatment designed to address undesired behaviors( origin /co-factors must be considered) therefore refining goal of treatment toward a more specific component of  CBT. That said, some aspect of Behavioral Therapy may be beneficial (yet to be deternmined)

As a sufferer of OCD (diagnosed by a mental health professional and medicated for it) and having specific fears of becoming infected with HIV I can sympathise with your fear, I've had the same sorts of thoughts.

I would suggest you seek a psychologist who specialises in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in order to deal with your concerns.

I would be more concerned about a plane crashing into my place of residence while I was inside than acquiring HIV from what you have described.

Good Luck.

I have read that HIV can not live out side it's host... I have also read from the docotors in the expert forums that HIV can only live from a few seconds to a couple days depending on a number of factors... What conditions would it take to have HIV live that long out side the body??

thanks and I know your right! i worry about everything when it comes to HIV. I refuse to get a flu shot because I relate needles to HIV.

I was just talking to my Mom on the phone and she agrees I need help... I have seen a psychiatrist (like one of the top ones in California) and she is great but she cant even help me with this... I'm so against getting medication but at this point I think it's my only option.... :\

Dude ur safe.
Go and ask anyone worrying about HIV and ask that were/are they worried if the needle that was used on them for drawing blood during an HIV test is/was infected?
MOST OF THEM will say yes they are worried ,,,,believe me...as HIV fear is such that it makes u think everything in the worst possible manner...which doesnt happen in this real world of ours called earth.

And ya...if ur gonna ask me the question ... Then my answer is YES i was worried about the needle being reused on me during my hiv blood test and i called the labs 100 times to answer  my question... etc.. and i even checked the needle after my blood draw.... i shook it upside down...straight ...everyway... and NO BLOOD came out from it....  the blodd goes in the container that they use.... it doesnt stick around the needle waiting for the next  person like u or me.... ... get it???

chill ur safe..
i visited a  anxiety counsellor and he helped me overcome such USELESS fears,...i think u too need one...

DUNT WORRY ABT THIS NOW..CHILL. U R SAFE AND SOUND !!

god i hope your right... i just dont hope i use this as another excuse to test out for another 3 months :/....  so there is no way possible that this could happen??? getting infected @ a planned parenthood or and HIV clinic like the ones ive been going to....

I understand u say that an HIV clinic is the last place to worry but wouldn't it be the #1 place to worry? i mean there are probably a few hiv + people in there every day right>

Injection!!! Getting a blood draw is just that, withdrawing. They aren't injecting anything into you vein.

The "Butterfly is a single use needle/port. There are very specific procedures that this clinic uses in the administration of HIV and other blood tests. An HIV Testing Facility is the last place to worry about becoming infected with HIV.  NO RISK.

From analyzing your verbage, you may wish to discuss your anxieties with your physician.

but it's my understanding that needle's are the most effective way to acquire HIV or other blood born diseases... After hearing about that story above I got a bit worried... the only thing keep me from full on freaking is out that I remember her taking it out of the package, since she did that is there any way it could be re-used? or that maybe it was infected before it was put in the package?
