separation anxiety 4 1/2 year old boy

My 4 1/2 year old son soon to be 5 in June has all of a sudden developed this seperation anxiety for about a month now. It came on all of a sudden. I don't know where it came from. I have a 7 year old daughter and 2 year old son. He goes to a Christian preschool I have to carry him up the stairs kicking and screaming that doesn't want to go to school, he usually stays in the principals office all day. On Sunday for church he doesn't want to go I have to carry him up the stairs kicking and screaming, they usually have to get the nursery pastor in there to set him straight that he's staying in nursery. He says he doesn't even like wee church anymore and he used to, he'd rather stay in time-out. He doesn't want to go to Awanas anymore either. My son has been in nursery since he was 6 weeks old and have never had a problem until just recently.  He'll check every 5 minutes to see if I'm still at home. He says he's going to be with mom the rest of his life. He also asked me if I was ever going to die because he didn't want me to. He only wants to be with mom not daddy. The teachers have commented he seems sad unlike his happy go lucky self he used to be.

Could it be he simply needs his parents around more , if he has been in day care since he was 6 weeks old, perhaps you could arrange your hours so he was with you ,it cant be much fun for him to be in the principals office all day, have you a relative nearby he could stay with if you have to work a lot ,and then he also has to go to Sunday church without you? This is a cry for help to you, hes asking for more of your time...is it not possible to change your busy schedule and accomodate your son..
