Hydrocodone - How bad am I?!?

Quick background -- was in an accident 4 years ago. Hemoraged (sp) disc as well as another protruding. I use to have a fairly high tolerance for pain, but shortly after the accident, I did occassionally need meds to help. For the first nearly 3 years, I did well, taking 3-4 5/500's a week. Then my Dr and I didn't see eye to eye. Anyway, dropped him and went to a pain management clinic. That's when the hell started...

They stated that due to the damage, I was not taking enough medication to stop the pain... (wth???), wrote me a script for 60 10/500's. The next day, I couldn't hardly work -- one of the worse pain attacks I ever had. Popped 2 pills at once, and got high. Worse part, I felt full of energy, and did in that one day, what would have taken me 3. Fast forward about 14 months, I was having a hard time getting 240 to last me a month. I'd cause myself to go through mini WDs (random 1 day at a time shots). I was up to 10 minimum, 15 max a day. I first ran out last March, it was pure hell. Since my first WD's, I've gone through 7, maybe 8 periods of WDs. I'm talking anywhere from 1-2 weeks (normal) and once for a month.

Anyway, I'm out again, last day was the 11th, so on my 2nd day. The WD's so far aren't too bad, much like the last time I went through them (I have a theory on this I may eloberate on later), regardless... With the exception of the first time, I've really wanted to stop. I need meds occassionally, but every time I take them, I can't stop. I've even had family try to help. Stole my own pills, how pathetic is that? Anyway, is this normal? 7x + of WDs

I know relapse is part of recovery, but I guess at 7x it's just me. I suppose I'm just one of those people that end up in the cycle forever? :/

10-15 a day. wow. I've been there definately, and would say most people on here have been in the same position you have. I've read all these post about people who have legitimate pain, but find they are addicted to the medication that gives them some relief. As a person with no legitimate pain that is addicted to hydrocodone and oxycodone, I feel the deepest sympathy for people who are suffering with addiction and have pain. Is there anything else you could take for pain that is less addictive? Or see a pain specialist and be honest with them about being hydro-dependent? I wish you the best of luck sweetie!

Thanks Sarah! :)

I have ligit pain - and have been up front with my Dr. I've burned as many bridges as I could so to keep myself a bit more in control - rather, to help others keep me in control.

Sadly, during my next refill, I'm having my sister come with me, and she's going to take the bottle. I tried it with my wife once, but she didn't try to hide them hard. Heck, one night after arguing, she suggested I take some pills to chill out. :(

I've tried other avenues, and it's all the same - surgery or drugs as needed. Unfortunately, while my Dr has been very helpfull, he's not willing to perscribe on bad days. His theory has been, 120/month. If I'm not able to make them last, WDs will soon to teach me how to ration better. Unfortunately, he's been wrong for the past 6 months. 120 lasts me a bit over a week. He's a good Dr, but I guess even they have to work within their limits.

I have thought about going for Bup/Sub - my Doc said no - stating should I have spasims I'm screwed, as these meds would cause instant and intense WDs if I tried to take pain meds while on them. I thought about going to a clinic but, they have conflicting hours with my job, are expensive, and I'm still stuck with having to deal with horrible pain if I should need any.

I had high hopes for Tramadol/Ultram, but it never killed the pain. It did make me... happier? Well, more uplifted at least, but still had pain... oddly enough, it is suppose to be a stronger pain killer then vicodin. Then again, I guess I didn't give it much of a chance - 1 Tramadol vs 10 Vicodin.
