I am a student at Kaplan University, Im going for my bacholers degree in psychology in substance abuse. Well there is a dispute on are discsusion board about rather we should consider drug and alcohol abuse as a disease. I consider it being a disease because their body become dependent in order to function, and their enable to control. Looking on the level with someone that has the true disease of addiction what would you consider are pro's and con's of stereo typing it as a disease?
I wanted to ask someones opinion with a higher education, and knowledge that has been working with clents with the disease.
Thanks Jayme

Welcome. You're sure to find some help here.
I think some people experience symptoms of depression up to a year or so afterward. Depends on your drug O' Choice (I think tweakers get hit the hardest) but it also probably depends on the individual, I'm not sure. Learn more by reading up on PAWS (Post-Acute Withdrawl Syndrome). Google it. Good Stuff. Read up on what Addiction Specialist Terence Gorski, has to say about it. It'll help you better cope if you do find yourself feeling "not quite right" immediately after detox.
Most of us have put our poor bodies through the ringer for quite some time. It's gonna take a little bit of time to heal.
Good Luck to you, and I wish you all the best in your detox. Let us know if we can help.
Warmest Regards,
Athena
Hi!I'm clean one month* I have severe depression.I think i have had it and anxiety all my life.thats why i self medicated myself for years.IE drugs and alcohol.this time i decided to see my doctor for some real help.I think i have made my depression worse by using.I also found out i have high blood pressure.real high!Sooooooo he put me on paxil, and a blood pressure med and lunesta because i cant sleep either.I probably am suffering from PAWS. google it!It sounds like you are suffering from post acute withdrawal syndrome.Check it out and tell me what you think.OK?take care and God Bless..............Bruce
I would imagine that most posters are going to tell you that the length of time for any depression and/or side effects of withdrawal are just going to vary from person to person and situation to situation. It will all depend on the medication you have been taking, the length of time you have been on, and with what regularity you have taken it. Anyway, those are my thoughts. I would imagine you could count on anywhere from weeks to months.
Any other thoughts people? There are many wise people on this forum who REALLY have been thru hell and back probably many times and can probably advise you better than I can.
Good Luck.
Love, Cindy
