Sore throat, Gonorrhea?

Hello Doctor, I will try to be brief.  About 4 months ago I performed unprotected oral sex on a TS escort.  I immediately felt guilty afterwards, freaked, and a week later was at my Doctor's office getting tested for STDs.  I was tested for HIV, Hepatitis, Syphlis, Chlamydia, and Gonorrhea which all came back negative.  My Doctor took a sample from my urethra to test for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea.  Would I be subject to another test if I had contracted Gonorrhea in my pharynx?  My throat continues to be sore for "periods" of time since the encounter.  Is a week too soon to test positively for Gonorrhea?  Thanks.

By coincidence, I just finished entering a comment in the string "Tingling sensation..." about gonorrhea of the throat. It almost never causes symptoms, and your sore throat probably is coincidental.  It also is difficult to transmit and goes away by itself without treatment.  Further, although oral gonorrhea is fairly easily acquired by penile-oral exposure (fellatio), it is almost never acquired by cunnilungus.

No, a week is just about the ideal time to test for gonorrhea.  You can rest assured you didn't acquire an STD in the encounter you describe.

Good luck--  HHH, MD

Sorry, I thought your exposure was cunnilingus.  (TS = transsexual, right?  But could be surgically complete or not, and either male to female or vice versa.)

The available data are 30+ years old, but studies in the 1970s indicated that virtually all untreated pharyngeal gonorrhea cases cleared up without treatment within 12 weeks.  However, the studies were not very well designed by today's standards, so the conclusion is soft.  But your risk probably was low, especially if there was no ejaculation.  On balance, I doubt you were infected and especially doubt you still are infected.  But if you want 100% reassurance, visit your local health department STD clinic and request a throat culture for gonorrhea.

I did perform fellatio on this pre-op TS.  You mentioned that it is fairly easily transmitted this way, however if in fact I ever did have gonohhrea of the throat it would have cleared by now, correct?  As I can recall, his/her semen was absent from this encounter.  Perhaps the sore throats are just coincidental.  Thank you so much for your input, you have put my mind at great ease!!!
