There's a good reason why walnuts pair so perfectly with autumn foods
like apples and squash: They, too, are in-season in the fall. While you
can find them year-round in stores, the majority of walnuts we eat in
the United States are harvested in Northern California between the
months of September and November. By adding them to your dishes, you get
a healthy dose of omega-3s, the fats that are linked with heart health,
brain function and reduced inflammation.
Try: Toasted and chopped, on top of oatmeal, applesauce and soups.
