If Mccain gets elected I'm going to Canada.  This is complete insanity. The oil companys are making record profits.  Iraq is stock pileing money from oil sales, while we pay to rebuild roads, hopsitals etc. in there country.  For the first time in my life I have no health insurance.  Not a good time to be uninsured at 48 (body parts falling off as I go down the road)lol   I feel sorry for who ever inherits Bush's and the republicans mess.

I agree Nauty, I have a ram van and I also do not know how some are making it, I'm very fortunate but things are tightening. We know of peps that are caught up in the mortgage disaster not good, I thought things were bad when we had all the base closers here we were caught up in that but came out on top. Hopefully we played it smart and can ride this out...

LOL   I'd like to see a $100.00 fine imposed on anyone that voted for Bush the 1st time and a $400.00 fine if they voted a second time for him. Turn those funds over to the people that are or may loose their homes (unless they voted for Bush). And those Bush people shouldn't be allowed to vote, since their judgement is obviously impaired.

oh i couldnt agree more, my husband makes good money, but we couldnt even keep up this winter with the oil prices...we will be paying our oil bill until december!!!
and now that we actually got snow tesrerday and its yet freezing again, we need more f-ing oil!  and the gas is killing us about 20 bucks a day for him to just get to and from work,,,its bull ****!!
flmagi, i think thats a wonderful idea!!
and mccain is no different than bush...just too old, he can use his age and alzhiemers as an excuse for his screw ups!

I actually don't like any of the three candidates, I want a do over!!!!!

As far as the oil prices, what can the President do? We live in a free market and the price of crude is what the commodity trades are willing to pay. Why, is that you may ask, well if you listen to the news you would hear that with the weak dollar vs the Euro and the mortgage fiasco oil is as good or better than gold.

Talking about the mortgage fiasco, that is real simple, people wanted to buy something they could not afford and was offered an easy way to get it and like so many Americans these days think that they are entitled to what they want. I think the officers of the lending institutions that offered these loans should be locked up forever, but each and every person needs to take responsibility of their own actions and not blame someone else when things don’t go their way.

While I am on my soapbox, we all need to take a close look at where everything we buy is coming from, you know, China, sure it is cheap and makes our dollar stretch further, but as we buy more and more we have less and less jobs here. So, my friends it is not all the President’s fault, sure the President has to shoulder his part of the blame, but so does the Congress and the House, so when it comes time to vote for those yahoos we need to look at is this person doing what is good for the country or just doing what it takes to get re-elected.

or maybe the mortgage fiasco is because of lost jobs, lost wages, unemployment , having to decide whether to pay your mortgage or heat your home or put food on the table...?
rising costs of EVERYTHING and wages staying at a deadlock...
my property taxes have gone from 1100.00 in 2000, to 3300.00 now...its got nothing to do with buying something i couldnt afford...its got all to do with it becoming unaffordable NOW...
and as much as i would LOVE to buy made in USA...i simply have to go with the cheapest i can get...
over 2 months of my husbands salary went to pay for oil just from nov until march...and winter isnt over yet...we got more snow yesterday and its 23 degrees out, time to order more oil...WE NEED SOME HELP UP HERE! everyone is getting hit hard up here.

Items made in China, Mexico and elsewhere lead to lost jobs, lost wages and unemployment, you reap what you sew. Yep, my taxes have gone up too, but I often work more than one job to make extra money. I am also one that believes NO ONE is going to take care of us, we have to look to the future and plan for ourselves. This may mean going back to school, leaning a new trade and/or making ourselves sellable to the jobs that are still here.

I f you listen to morgage problem, for the most part, it has nothing to do with the increase in taxes, it was people buying houses and interest rates that were unreal and ignoring the part about the rates increasing.

Geez and I am complaining about the cost of a frigging can of soup.....and milk, eggs, and fresh veggie.......a buck and a quarter for a green pepper.....what the fudge?.....I find t interesting to people watch in the market.....it's like they are walking zombies.....It was kind of sad.......

The mortgage deal.....I have to agree with vic.  The buyers do have to take some responsibility for their decisions, but at the same time the lenders really had a good pitch on the deals .....it's like if you fall for a scam....shame on the them and shame on you.....not fair, but it just suck all around.  Damm Bush......he needs to be sent over to Iraq on a scud missile.......ugh

Going back to school to learn a new trade is all fine and well if you're already financially set and young enough to do that. But what about those that aren't?  What about the retired folks on set incomes and their property taxes and home insurance have skyrocketed, and the disabled Vets, the disabled, single parents? Its easy to say get a job when you have money, but there aren't that many jobs out there, at least not here. People can't sell their homes and move because of the market and alot are upside down on the mortgages. Because of the housing crash, jobs are being lost. It may not be affecting everyone yet, but it will soon. Walk a mile in other peoples shoes, look beyond your own cozy world and see the reality of peoples positions. Its not pretty whats going on out there.

I totaly understand what your saying, but I think your making it sound too simple.  It's not easy to get a second job.  People are having trouble finding a first job. Take myself for example.  I own my own home. I have a 30 yr fixed and got it at good price. It's just a cute little 2 bedroom. 30 years old and nothing fancy and was well within my price range when I bought it.  I have my own business that supported me for over 11 years comfortably.  I had health insurance all my life until the age of 42, when it just got insanely exspensive and couldn't do it any longer.  Ok so now my business has dropped by about 60 % and I should probably just let it go and get a job elsewhere, but I can't find a job that would even pay equal to the 40% of business I have left. Hmmmm what to do. I had some savings which I used up last summer to get through because of no business. I really feel I have done the right things all my life and now at 48 I stand to lose it all.  This is just me, but so many I talk to are in the same boat.
It's sad to think that after all those years of having health insurance, that if I get cancer now. They will let me die. 60% of Americans that have cancer and no health insurance will die within 5 years.  Even though we could save them with treatment. Sad sad sad.
I think all Americans have a right to a decent job and health care.
To everyone doing well right now.  Take a close look at your fellow countrymen that are struggling so, due to no fault of their own.  We need a change for sure.

luckily i have, a cheap mortgage even considering my taxes have tripled since ole bushy has been in office, but yeah, none of his BS policies have effected that, YEAH RIGHT!  in the state i live in, our taxes fully fund education, and dont EVEN tell me "no child left behind" doesnt effect my taxes...IT DOES, greatly!
also think back when the housing market was good, the economy was good, people actually had JOBS and the dollar was actually worth something, feeding your family didnt require a second mortgage and gas was $1.69 a gallon..yeah, lets blame the home buyer... i highly doubt its all because people bought and wanted something they couldnt afford...wont believe it.
i very well could afford my home THEN, with the price of EVERYTHING trippeling, gas, food, taxes, oil, ANY insurance - (health, auto and home),...and my husband is making $5 bucks an hour more now than he was when we bought our home (go figure)...things are tough...(oh, and i have 3 boys we are raising also)...dont tell me the BS thats going on has nothing to do with whose in office...thats just plain ignorance.

oh and Mary, i hear ya!!!  we had to drop our health and dental insurance...had it for years...but just couldnt afford the new triple price of the premium...so we too are uninsured, for almost 4 years now...
lets blame the consumer...i like that one....LOL!
change is about 7 years overdue!  look around people...
mt husband was just laid off for 4 weeks...when he filed for unemployment, there were 3 jobs available for him to apply for....of course he applied...but found he was making more on unemployment, now thats a good one!!!
bush and his cronie administration IS to blame., with ALL of his failed policies,..not me as the consumer!

I have to say, I feel like those words are coming out of my mouth.....I am so disgusted at how this country is falling apart and I read Bush is blaming the Dems for holding up legislation. He has taken absolutely NO responsiblity for the mess we are in. I would at least have a little (and I mean LITTLE) respect for him if he at least owned up to making some bad decisions but trying to find a solution to our problems. Not sugarcoating the problems we have  at home and globally!  It is a very upsetting and worrisome time for us all!

I don't think it is Bush's fault anymore than it is Clinton's, Regan’s, Carter's and so on. Let’s face it, we are all greedy, maybe not you and I but the nation as a whole. People that invest in the stock market want the highest possible return on their investment, the consumer wants things as cheap as possible and something has to give. Meaning the labor cost has to next to nothing, so where can you get labor for nothing, you guessed it China. By the way, I think that executives that make multimillion dollar salaries while the company is going under should be fined and put under the jail. Unfortunately we see our greed festering now and it may be too late, if we all don’t work at changing our ways. So what is a decent job? I have stacked cement blocks, pitched bales of hay and straw, shoveled manure, worked in retail stores and worked as a professional. Right now I do any task that is needed from plunging the toilet to designing and building new equipment. If I needed extra money I could have a job in a matter of a day. Ok, it may be at wally world or micky D’s, but if I needed the extra income or the benefits such as insurance, I would do it. In fact, it was only a few very short years ago that I worked retail in the evening, after my regular job, to afford Christmas presents for the wife and kids. I am not complaining, I was raised that a man does what it takes to provide even if he has to work multiple jobs.

Yes, I am a conservative and maybe that is why I think that people need to work as hard as possible to be self supportive. However, I do have compassion and think that we are obligated to provide for those are not physically or mentally able to provide for themselves. As far as health insurance goes, I think that everyone has a right to health care, but having the government handle it scares me to death, look at what all they can screw up and make cost multiple times what the private sector can do cheaper and turn a profit on. While is healthcare so high? Those of us that are in our 40’s have grown up with the attitude that if anything bothers you go to the doctor. Why not insurance covers it and if the doctor makes a mistake sue him, it’s your chance at winning the lottery. What if you could go get health care at a reasonable cost, and have the assurance that if the doctor was negligent he/she would lose their license and go to jail. Would you give up your right to sue?

I know this is getting long, but it is never too late to learn, to start over, to feel and be productive.

because of the clinton years...i was able to buy a home...the economy was good, we had insurance and a savings account, the dollar was worth something and he was very diplomatic with all countries...including HIS OWN, AND WE HAD A SURPLUS... oh but wait he got a hummer in the white house...THE HORRORS! how much money was wasted on that one by the conservatives...lol.

i too was raised to take care of myself , i am a realtor - yeah thats getting me far lately, i also was able to go back to school THEN and obtained a license in cosmetology, i have always worked i had 3 jobs at 1 point...
i NOW stay home because daycare was eating up what i made...it had become pointless.
and i am now paying for NOT going to the doctor when i should have, 4 years with no health insurance - you DONT go to the doctor unless your dieing.., but had i been able to keep my insurance and gone to the doc when i should have, i wouldnt be having the "issues" i am now having...so i think your comment of "being in your 40's and running to the doctor for EVERYTHING" is quite false,
healthcare costs have skyrocketed because of sue happy people?   WOW!
again...lets blame the consumer...lol.

I hope this forum is an example of the bigger picture. Everyone, but one person gets it. Vicuser, you are in a dream world. How in the world can you defend the Bush Crime Family? Him and his regime lied to get us into this so called war. It's not a war, it's an occupation. Where stuck there. Bush has changed his reason for taking over Iraq 15 times. He was too stupid to see what would happen. He promised Americans he would pay for the war with Iraq oil. He promised Americans the invasion would make gas cheaper in the US. Today Iraq is producing more oil than before the Invasion, and they are selling it to us for $110 a barrel. You said you give him credit for being a man who sticks to his principals. How has he done that? He has broken laws. He ignores the Constitution. He will do and say anything to make it to January, without being impeached. He's a freaking war criminal. As far as the economy. George Bush made it perfectly clear from day one, that his plan for the economy was to raise oil prices (at the time the price was $20 a barrel) and to devalue the US Dollar. Well, he did both, and look at our country. Again, he was too stupid to see what higher oil prices and a low dollar would do.
What exactly are conservatives, conservative about? You are not conservative about war. You guys love it. You are not conservative about spending. The USA in the last 7 years has become the biggest debtor nation in the world. China owns us.
As far as your work hard nonsense. That is your way of saying, you hate welfare.(I am a proud Democrat, and I hate it too). But, why do Republicans have so much hate in their hearts, that they vote against their economic best interests. You said you had 2 jobs. George Bush lowered the earned income tax rate from 25% to 15%. So, you like hard work, but you vote for a guy who lowered the tax rate for millionaires sitting on their *** making money in the stock market.
The only reason the Republicans are going to try and win this election, is to keep Bush out of jail. They know that no one can get us out of this mess Bush has put our country in. I hope McCain wins. Then there wont be another Republican President for 40 years. I am going to leave your racist comments about Rockstar Obama alone.

No, I don’t get my news from Fox, actually I have only listened to it a few times and really don’t care for it and before you start I don’t listen to Rush either. I do watch one of the major three networks for their slant on the real facts. If you notice, I have not said a word about how bad I think past Presidents were, it doesn’t get us anywhere. I was making the point that within a couple weeks after President Bush took office the first term there was a report on CBS that the economy was showing signs of weakening and I found it amazing that before the election it was so great and right after the inauguration it was getting bad.

You know, I have been very cautious not to name call or spew hatred toward any one person or party. I will always keep an open mind and vote for who I think will be the best leader for this great country. I have my own feeling about the current and past administrations, some good some bad. My whole point to this is, I do not know who to vote for, I do not like any of the three candidates at this point in time. However, if the nastiness and blame laying that I am hearing here, from a few, is a true representation of the Obama followers then I don’t know that will be my choice.

Avisg and allaboutmary...I think the media has portrayed both sides to be something they're not.  We've all been unfairly characterized by what party we happen to have on our voter's registration card, and that's a shame.  A republican does not mean they believe in everything the republican's have on their platform, and a democrat does not mean that they believe in everything the democrat's have on theirs.  It's rarely all or nothing for most people, but unfortunately, it seems that if you identify with one of these groups, people think they know what you're all about.  I'm thinking, the best candidate should be considered, rather than their affiliation.  Glad we're not all afraid to voice our opinions here, and I for one, appreciate all that this forum has to offer, as well as it's people.

Ron Paul just said on CNN that if he had to vote right now he would vote for Obama.  He said it was not an endorsement though. One of the reasons I like Obama is, he is the only one that wants to cross party lines and take whats good from both parties and seems more willing to do what the people want (that would be us). He's extremely intelligent, honest, level headed and of the 3 candidates is the least swayed by big bussiness and lobyists. He is for change and there can be no doubt, change is needed.

I know what your saying.  Thats one reason I am for Obama. Nothing is going to get done unless republicans and democrats work together.  Obama is the only one out of the 3 that wants to work with the opposing party to get things done.  He knows its going to take compromise. I really wouldn't be surprised if he chose a repub for vice pres.
He knows before anything gets done the country must be united.

I am really loving this post.  It's really great to be able to debate these things.

Do you remember Gilligan’s Island? There was one show that a exiled dictator was put on the island. During the show they decided that they should “elect” a leader. The exiled guy promised them ”dis, dat and the other thing”. So far that is all I have heard from the three candidates as well.

He does have a plan for health care very similar to Hillary's except it is not mandatory. McCain's is for a tax cut of 5,000 for a family which would leave us most with 14,000 left to pay each year.
Also Obama wants to clean up NAFTA, so we benefit, not lose.
One of the big things is he wants big business out of Washington.
He says Pharmisutical (sp) and Insurance co. etc can have a seat at the table to figure things out , but they will no longer have all the seats.
He wants to make it more profitable for companies to keep there business here instead of shipping jobs out of the country.
He also wants to get rid of the tax cuts that the wealthy benefit from and not the poor and middle class.
I so want to stay and talk all day, but I have to get some stuff done. lol  Hope your around later or tomorrow.

Did you hear what McCain said .  It would give family's a little break and maybe they could buy an extra text book for their child.  Grrrrrrr children should get their school books free.  When you say text book , you mean school book, right ?
McCain has even admitted to his lack of knowledge on the economy.
This election are like all the recent ones.  It's really a choice of lesser evils.

I need to go to the websites and read what the health care plans that Hilary and Obama are proposing. I just don't want nationalized health care, have you talk to people from Canada? I do think there is a bigger underlying problem, primarily we need to cut the overhead that the doctors face, namely malpractice insurance and the cost of filing insurance papers, both private and gov't. My Dr and I have talked about what he really makes and you would be shocked. Yes, he makes a good income, but not nearly what one would think.

I too think NAFTA is a bad thing, remember Ross Perot and his quote about "the sucking sound from the south" that everyone made fun of? I find it interesting that has been 16 years since then and neither side has done anything to fix this problem. So what will Obama really do?

Any candidate can say what they want about getting big business out of Washington, but as long as we have greedy corrupt politicians, on both sides, only looking out for themselves and the ability to be re-elected it won’t happen. If he has a plan, what is it and is it something that can really work?

Your next two points go hand in hand. Keeping business here and taxes. I am sure that you are aware that the taxes that are paid by companies on profit are close to 50%. This is the same for large corporations and the small sub chapter-s corporation. This does not include the 7% social security tax that the employers are required to pay for each employee. Right now the top 5% of wage earners pay over 50% of the income tax that the feds receive each year. A typical middle income person pays 15% in taxes and person in the top 5% pays 35%, this is fed tax only. I won’t go into the Illegal aliens, aka undocumented migrant workers, not payment of taxes right now.

So with that said, if we continue to raise the taxes on corporations and the “rich” what do you think that will do to jobs?  I do think that the average American deserves a break, I support the “fair tax” but most people are too ignorant to really look at this, but it fairly distributes the tax burden and helps the poor and low income. Also, it would provide tax revenue from the illegal’s. Another added benifit is it would eliminate the IRS and look at the savings to the gov't there.

I agree the gas tax reduction is stupid. If it is repealed for the summer and passed on to the oil companies, they will just raise prices and we will pay it any way, actually more because the Gov’t will have to get a cut of their added income. How is that for screwing us?

Since you mentioned it education funding is very sore subject for me. Have you ever looked at the fed and state funds, per student, that are given to a large city school verses a suburb or rural school and the results for that buck. In this case money is not the answer, parental attitude is.

Edwards was my first choice...but he dropped out...i think people were afraid he couldnt do his job because Elizabeth is sick...but i bet cancer research would be fully funded

and as far as hatred being "spewed" towards our current president...how can you not hate the guy?  come on...what GOOD has he done?  absolutely NOTHING, not 1 thing, Flmagis post with his resume said it all...

i have talked to a few canadians, they  were not unhappy with their healthcare at all...one of them is or was here at the forum, dont know if she still here...and it sure beats having nothing for health care at all...

now parents are to blame for education funding...??????

and as far as raising taxes on the rich, i hear so many complaining about this...what i dont understand is NONE of them (that i know personally) are in that bracket...they are all middle to low income and some are even below poverty level...why would THEY complain and worry about someone who has more pocket change than they make in a year..?  is this where all the greed is....

i think the next administration should absolutely not worry about the top 5%, lol...they have been doing just fine these past 7 years...even Donald Trump says thats the ONLY reason he voted republican...he gets to keep his money and the tax breaks and write offs are simply amazing for his wallet...lol!  i liked that...quite admirable of him to be so truthful...he also said hes made enough money these past 7 years that hes willing to pay more in taxes so he'll be voting democrat....he knows what little he did pay in taxes went to an illegal occupation of Iraq...

I would love to have a rational conversation with you, but I am not sure that is possible. I don’t think that the current administration has done a great job, but there is more than one person responsible for the current problems here. However, it is clear to me that you won’t look beyond the hate you have towards President Bush and the Republican party, too bad you will never grow beyond what you are with that type of thinking.

A similar resume could have been written about any past President, but what good does it provide? None, it is just a bunch of slanted statements aimed to feed the hatred that some just can’t get past.

No, I am not blaming the parents for education funding. I think that if you look at the parents that take an interest in their kids and their education you will find a kid that does well. Kids that have parents that don’t see the need for a good education or don’t care typically don’t do well and drop though the cracks. I would try to explain how money ties in to that, but I am sure you would misconstrue what I am saying so why should I even try.

I have talked to many, many Canadian's.  I've had about 30 Canadian customers in the past 7 years.  They own homes here in Florida.  They will not move here permantley because they would lose their healthcare in Canada. Many of them said they feel sorry for us American's that don't have healthcare.   They are very happy with their healthcare and find it obsurd that we don't take care of our people.

I must admit as far as education and schooling go ....I don't know much. Only know what I hear from friends.  I have no children and since I hit menapause ....I don't particularly like them. LOL  (just kidding, but I really don't have the patients any longer)

So I'm off to a 4year olds birthday party this afternoon. Where I will drop off my gift and run like hell. lol   ( Ok  I lie, I will stay for cake.)

That is interesting, maybe different people there feel differently as well. The people that I have talked to said it is better than nothing, but they have long wait times to get problems taken care of. Many have come here and paid out of their own pocket and don't think the level of care that Canada provides is as good as what we have. This is only hearsay, and I have no first hand experience.

One thing that makes me really concerned about “free” health care is what will keep it from being abused?  Right now if I get sick and go to the Dr I pay a co-pay, if I go to the ER I pay a lot more. I have had people that I supervised before, I won’t go into their whole story, that used the ER as a Drs office for their kid because their child was receiving public assistance and it didn’t cost them either way. It burnt me up since someone pays, namely the rest of us. Don’t get me wrong his kid needed care and was glad they could it was just the fact he didn’t care what it cost.

I really believe that if everyone had health care it would ease up the ER visits.  Most people that use the ER instead of making a doctors appt. is because they don't have ins. Doctors office's will not see you unless you can pay, but the ER will.  Yes there will always be those who abuse the system, but it's really getting abused now.
