past drug use and pregnancy

I just confirmed that I am expecting my third child. I'm worried about the effects that my drug use in the past of methamphetamine and marijuana will have on my unborn child. However, I quit my drug use prior to conceiving. I used those drugs heavily for about four years.

You have beenclean for awhile now?   I got pregnant a year into my recovery from shooting up speed for 2 years (also shot heroin, addicted by age 14) and then 4yrs later was pg again.  My two sons are very fine, watched them both graduate this week.  Talk to your dr. about it for your own piece of mind and also continue to research the topic online.

I think most people would agree that your baby will be fine. I don't know anything about meth, but I smoked pot a lot for years in my 20's, and although I didn't get pregnant until 34, I had no problems with the pregnancy. With #1, it was unplanned, so it was about three weeks in when I found out, and those three weeks were over the holidays so I did quite a bit of drinking and smoking and had a lot of 'fun'. Totally knocked it off around week 2 (before I knew) b/c I felt different and had no desire to drink or smoke. Anyway, it is my opinion that past drug use will probably not harm the fetus, it is during various stages in pregnancy that drugs can hurt (or not), it is not an exact science and most research comes from retroactive studies.
A very good website is: www.motherisk.org
You can call them and speak to a nurse or a doctor, they are a worldwide organization that deals in the study of drugs in pregnancy and are based out of the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto - they have done more research on street drugs and precription drugs than any other group (I think anyway), and are very friendly. They put my mind at ease with this pregnancy, they didn't judge or ask questions, they just answered my questions. Good luck with the baby and all will be well!
