Norco, about to have baby how to deal with baby's withdrawals if she has any.

Due to severe pain, I have been on Norco through out entire pregnancy, if my daughter has signs of withdrawal, how bad can they be, how do I help her through it, and what do I expect?  This has been killing me, and I feel so sad and scared.  I pray everyday that she is fine, born healthy and beautiful as my first daughter was.  Any advice, I would appreciate.  I am due now.

I agree, I am going through the same thing and I have been worrying and stressing. My ob/gyn and high risk dr prescribe me the medication (norco) and I take it as directed. I have been on it for 4 years unfortunately it is my life now, due to complications in my diabetes.. I was lucky to be able to have another child and feel very blessed... I wish that I could have gotten off all the medication but fortunately was only able to get off the MS Contin and stay on the norco. The dr was pretty upset when she heard I stopped the mscontin without having a taper method with her, but i tried to explain that I really dont get withdrawal symptoms that bad: she was still upset and I was wrong to not inform her. It works both ways.. when pregnant you need to keep your doctor in on EVERYTHING you do! EVERYTHING! If you don't think your dr understands what you are going through, by all means get a second opinion. You can ask a question 50 different ways but you cant get the dr to tell you what you want to hear. the answer will remain the same. Taking opiates will result in your child being born with a sedated feeling, or it has gotten used to the drug and will have withdrawal. I have read tons and tons of websites that have info- good and bad. The one thing I realized throughout all the researching was that I cannot get to know the people writing these circuits and they cannot get to know me and my pain Only my doctor can and that should be your best friend throughout all of your pregnancy if you care for your baby. I have been honest and it breaks my heart to know I had to take so many pills and I am 36 weeks with my baby due in one week for a c-section. I am sooo scared that I will have to watch him go through withdrawals like many people say he will, and MY HR doctor informed me of all the risks and it hurt so bad. I felt so lost and was crying but they cant lie to you, they will tell you the truth. Children that are born with their mothers having took opiates are 3-4 times more likely to have SIDS. That was the worst info for me. I pray every day that cuting back this week will be enough but you cannot know until the baby is born. You have to decide what to do with your pain management but most of all you have to share this information with your doctor BEFORE you decide what to do becuase my doctor was pretty upset when I told her I stopped the morphine without telling her first. Whatever you decide you have to tell your doctor and get her to help you. That is what they are there for! That is what they went to school for 8+ years!! Hope this has helped you or anyone that comes across this post... Talking to your doctor is key, whether you like their response or not!

The main priority above all is the health and life of your baby. This is why the doctors need to know so they can treat the baby and give her the immediate attention she'll need. I've never heard of a mother having her baby taken away who was honest and then did what the doctors told her to do. I have heard of it happening many times when nothing is said and they find out the hard way--by being caught off guard and unprepared. They get very upset when a mother is selfish enough to let her baby suffer. My SIL is a neonatal intensive care nurse and we had this discussion awhile ago regarding a mutual friend and she said the same thing.. Honesty is not just the best policy as far as the babies health is concerned but that there is no "hiding" it. Babies born addicted show very distict symptoms of withdrawl. And they are trained to spot babies born addicted. Be honest, it's really the only way to ensure your babies health and to show you are a mother who can make good sound judgements for your child.

The doctors will help her. They will use morphine to wean her off and score her daily (bowels, nutrition intake, muscle tension, screams, shakes etc) Once she starts scoring lower she will be closer to being sent home. They will not release her to you while she's in withdrawal. Also, I know in my state child protective services become involved.  Yes, EVEN though it was prescribed. May be different in your state. I've been through this. It s painful for them. And even more painful for you.....the mom. :( stay strong. And get off those pills if you can. Hugs.

You need to make your doctor aware of your usage. They need to know so that right upon your daughters birth they can give her the treatment she'll need to not be thrown into withdrawal. Please make sure your doctor knows. Withdrawl in a newborn is serious and can only be treated by a doctor. There isn't anything you yourself can do to treat her, she'll need immediate medical care and will have to be closely monitored in hospital. Are you prescribed the Norco? If so then your doctor already knows and you can ask the doctor what to expect and he can explain to you how they go about treating withdrawals in your baby. If you've been taking them without a script you need to tell the doctor asap. Not telling the doctor would be a grave mistake and would look really bad on you. Plus they know anyways when a baby is born addicted. They show withdrawal symptoms and the medical people who deliver babies every day are highly trained to spot an infant in withdrawal. By telling the doctor now shows you have good judgement, care about your baby enough to make sure she won't suffer needlessly and they will make sure your little baby doesn't suffer. She will get immediate attention upon birth and be very well taken care of. Do you get the Norco prescribed?
