Abusing Narcotics in the First Trimester

I found out thursday that I was pregnant.  I had one period last month and so I didnt think i was pregnant.  I was taking vicodin, percocet, and tramadol 2-4 times a week and now am very worried that I have caused development problems in with my baby.  I feel terrible I didn't know I was pregnant and now worry that I may have to have an abortion.  Does abusing narcotics in the first trimester affect the baby if I stop immediately.  I am currently 10wks pregnant.

I agree with everyone else here.  In the days gone by in history...people drank and smoked liked chimneys and for the most part their babies were blessedly fine.  Tell you Doctor the deal.... you didn't know. Don't beat yourself up!!!  Plus, if you really only did a few, the baby is probably fine. Even if you were doing more than you admitted there is a good chance the baby will be fine if you stop now.

Do see an OB/GYN as soon as possible before making any decisions on your own. Our best thinking got us taking the pills.... so let someone else make the major call.

God bless you and your unborn (probably healthy) baby!  It's good that you CARE enough to stop.  So stop beating yourself up and see your situation as the blessing it surely is.  Perhaps the universe sent you this gift so you couldn't go down the road of destruction furher. Many still would. So, you are different from them.  I had an abortion in college because I thought my family would kill me for getting pregnant. I think it's the most seffish thing I've ever done.  I never did have kids and am now over 40. I never don't think about what I did. Please learn from me!

Great advice from ibkleen.  You're not alone. I used cocaine through the first trimester of my first pregnancy and she turned out brilliant.  Talk to you obgyn and don't stress, it's not good for you :)

Hi Heather,

Before you go making any life altering decisions, please see your OBGYN and get honest. He/she can advise you on the best way to handle this and also test to be certain the baby is healthy. No one here can tell you whether or not the baby has been effected.

Please stay calm about this and get to the doctor as soon as possible. Let us know how you make out.
