Anyone ever read this book? I just read it via kindle. Has anyone ever tried the Vitiman Supplements/Minerals that he suggests in this book? If so can you take all these Vitiamns with a Multivitman? Did this help anyone ... ?
I have the book and have read it. Indeed, Dr. Gant was a consultant at my last rehab and I began and took the supps the entire time I was there and for a long time thereafter . . . 10 months, total. After that I continued with L-Tyrosine for years.
I think they are a huge help and were critical in getting my brain chemistry to a place where I could stay in sustained recovery. The supps do have numerous vitamins and minerals, but the primary thing is the amino acids, which are the building blocks for neurotransmitters (NT's). If you don't have the right amino acids in sufficient quantities, you won't have the NT's necessary to have a "normal" brain.
At the very least, the theory goes, we addicts are NT deficient after any significant period of using - - - with the artificial NT's being provided in pill (or whatever) form, our brain, in its wisdom, shuts down the production of whatever is being so provided. Then when up and quit, we got a brain that's left with NOTHING, which it screams and whines about until we a) suffer through life without long enough for natural production to resume or b) give it what we know so well will make our brain feel good again.
That would be a tough enough situation, but (the theory continues) many of us addicts and alcoholics never had sufficient NT's to begin with. That fact is why so many of us found using to be such an attractive option in the first place -- our brains were already deprived of the very NT's that were supposed to make us feel good and get substantial "feel-good" rewards out of the various things we do as a part of normal life.
One of the nice things about Gant's program is that it's not the one-size-fits-all of a generic amino acid protocol. I don't have my book handy, but I think it's in Chapter 4 that there's a series of short tests that tell you what NT (or NT's) you're probably deficient in. Then, based on those results, you take certain supps. At my rehab I was taking the Dopamine Paks in the am and the Serotonin Packs in the pm. Other people were taking other things depending on their results.
