Darvocet Question

I seem to notice that I don't see too many people on the forum trying to detox from darvocet.  Is there much of a differnce between darvocet and vic's????  If so I'm thinking about having my doc switch me to that instead.  to wean off of.  anyone have any knowledge on this.  I do realize that darvocet is not as strong as vic's.  Is it easier to get off of?

Darvocet actually started my addiction as well. My doctor has me tapering on vicodin right now.. I am over twenty four hours without having one.. YAHH!.. but its kicking my butt! I am taking darvocet right now, and it doesn't really help with the pain right now.. but I hope that once the vicodin is out of my system that the darvocet will help. I don't have bad withdrawls this time (thank god), but I am in a lot of pain. I have a broken tailbone and I can barely sit. It stinks. I would watch it with anything that you start taking, because darvocet tend not to work after awhile and then like everyone else said, you are out looking for something stronger. Best of luck to you.

Don't worry about being new and giving advice. Many many many people give tons of advice although they are new to recovery as well. Your input is appreciated..

Hi Nauty,

Actually Darvocet started my addiction. After a while (2 months or so). They had little to no effect on me. So I started looking for stronger meds. Since you are tapering though it may be appropriate. I am so new at this I don't think I should be giving out advice. I Just know that it is a weak opiate and it did basically nothing for me.

I think you'd just have to try it. I know it's a weaker opiate, but pretty much did nothing for me. But, some people say it works well for them. You may be someone that can use it to your benefit.

I am currently tapering from vicodin........I am almost there.  Probably should just leave it alone......I am down to 15 mg a day.......I know how pathetic.....I am such a chicken chit of withdrawals........but i've been taking them everyday for 7-8 years.  Just really curious about the darvocet because i dont hear many screaming to get off them.  thanks for your response.........

Darvocet contains a relatively weak opioid, propoxyphene.  On the other hand, it's the opioid that launched a great many addicts (including me) into full blown active addiction.

I would think that as step down it would be a good thing.  I never suffered any physical wd from propoxyphene, but that may just have been because a) it was in the early part of my period of use; and b) back then I wasn't a constant daily user - I would have breaks each month of one to two weeks while I waited for my "friend's" next script to be filled.  However, I do know that the obsession and compulsion to use got to be pretty much as strong with propoxyphene as it later became with other things.  I was soon always on the hunt and always waiting until I had more.

Thus, it seems to me that going from hydro to propoxyphene is a good thing.  I would keep in mind, however, that it's a bit like jumping out of the fire and back into the frying pan.  It may not be quite as hot, but you'll still be cooking.  With me, the fact of the matter is that if I'm cooking, I'm done.
