What is the typical time to be on Suboxone

I took Subutex years ago but was forced to by family.  Years later I have decided to quit the Oxy's and spending ALL of my money on them.  Friday I went to the doc and he was Rx's me Roxycodone and I asked if I could try Subutex for and "off label" drug for pain - he has no idea I am addicted.  I dont want to be a long term user.  In you opinion should I try this for three months or a little longer while reducing my doses weekly.  I have no one else to talk to about this so any help will be great.  This is the first time in 5 years that I have WANTED to stop the Oxy's and Fenyanl and I am actually proud of myself even though it is day 3.  Please wish me luck and give any advice you can to me.  I will appreciate any thoughts.  I am also a strong minded person and I know I can do this because it was MY choice.  Thanks for listening.

I want to thank everyone for your response.  I have hope.  Day 4 and no cravings and I am positive I can do this.  I want it to be short term but I guess I'll do as my body allows.  The only reason I am not truthful with my doc is b/c I am in the legal field in a small town and even though its private - people talk.  AGAIN THANKS EVERYONE for your advice!!!

I just thought I would give you my experience with sub which has been a good experience overall. I have been on suboxone since aug 08. All in all it has saved my life. It has allowed me to work on my recovery program. I am now in the process of weaning my self off. I am doing it slowly and it has not been too difficult so far. I think if used as a tool to help with your recovery program, it can be great. I go to NA and see a therapist also. What I have seen and heard is that some people feel strongly one way or another on how to get "clean". It really is so individual. I tried so many ways and failed. Suboxone worked and is working for me. It is not a magic pill but it has given me time to work on me. Looking back, one fustration was that my doctor was not very informative. I was placed on suboxone in a treatment center without having any information about it.  I would suggest doing some research and make sure you understand the pros and cons. I think I would have not stayed on it as long but weaned myself off quicker (in a couple months). Whatever way you choose, I wish you the best in your recovery.

sub is a matience drug designed to be taken for life, but there are some people here that have used it as a taper med,
i was on it for a short time, did not help me at all
i suggest that you be honest with your doctor, that would be the first step, to get clean we all have to be willing to do whatever it takes, being truthfull is a start
i was going to say that the amount of time a patient takes sub is a personal descion, but i know all to well that once you get hooked choice is gone for some
what mg are you taking, how long do you want to stay on it?
