Detox

My son is addicted to opiates. He is trying to quit cold turkey. What can I expect to see him go thru, and how and what can I do to help?

i'm not sure which opiate your son is taking as you did not specify above.i have detoxed off of lortab & percocet at an earlier time. those are the lower end opiates & the best thing to do would be to taper him off but, that's only my opinion. i was on a methadone maintenance program they had me up to 135mgs and i tapered myself down to 10mgs for 2 months then jumped off cold turkey. methadone is compared to the street drug herion but has a longer half life meaning... it takes a couple days longer for withdrawal to set in.heroin is right away. the symptoms can be ... day one & two of withdrawal are mostly tired, weak and some restless leg syndrome when he tries to rest still or sleep. day three & four is all the above as well as lower to mid back pain.if he's taking the lower end opiates you should expect after day 3 & 4 things will start to improve. after day 5 progressively better. for me i'm on day 10 from cold turkey methadone detox at home and last night was the first night i had slept more than 2 hrs, i still am suffering from restless legs "only when i try to sleep" but it's horrible. we go with a motto here and it's ...you have to be okay even though your not ok. it's getting me by. everyone has their own way of detoxing off this stuff and no way is really all that better than the other. he's gonna be uncomfortable for a bit but it's a small price to pay to be free again. he needs to get a good multi vitamin "one with as many vitamins in it as possible take 4 in the morning and 4 a night to start for the first 5 days. and get some whey protein "chocolate is better tasting" this regimen seems to minimize withdrawal symptoms cause it's replacing vitamin deficiency do to taking the opiates and now withdrawal. i hope this helps. if you have any other questions feel free to ask. your son should make an account on here for help & support. good luck and god bless ~sally
