DO NOT CT!! But, you're going to want to wean as fast as possible without causing your body shock.. I strongly recommend talking to your DR ASAP, and if that's not possible, an ER or Urgent Care. Explain your dangerous situation and see what their advice is. I have heard of pregnant women being switched to clonazepam, valium, and even methadone (this last one I don't understand, but I read it in an OB office book). Xanax is this worst possible drug (anxiety wise) you can take during pregnancy- but if your dr's are willing to do extra u/s and frequent testing, they may keep you on it. Only problem is, is if something bad happens, it's too late. I was on 1 to 2 mg a day for about a year and a half when I found out I was pg. I weaned FAST (not recommended, just my experience) and my baby girl is now 9 months and I haven't slept since the last night I took a xanax!! Insomnia, I'm sorry to say, will not go away especially because of new baby, but even without a new little one, it can take MONTHS for your sleep patterns to return. HTH
I have taken 3- .5 tabs a day for more than 5 years. Ran out. First 3 days I had siesures. Finally I got some more and am trying to taper, seems to be working good. Don't risk your baby.
I also wanted to add after pondering this....
The doctor just might keep you on the Xanax throughout the duration of pregnancy as to not harm the baby. Its a tough call- stay on the Xanax or taper off? Both can be a potential hazard. I did some research and this is what I found.
Stay strong girl. I am almost 8 months along and am addicted to Vicodin- I have a heavy addiction and just yesterday came clean to my DR. You can do this.
"Human studies do exist for alprazolam (xanax), 411 women who where exposed to xanax in there 1st trimester did not suggest an increased frequency of malformations. 133 and 149 women respectively found no increased risk of malformations nor any pattern. Neonatal withdrawal symtoms have been noted after exposure in late pregnancy."
"Xanax is a Category D drug. Pregnancy Category D is given to medicines that have shown clear evidence of risk to the fetus in studies. Pregnancy Category D is a stronger warning than a pregnancy Category C or B classification. A pregnancy Category D medicine may still be given to a pregnant woman if the healthcare provider believes that the benefits to the woman outweigh the possible risks to the unborn child."
You probably know all of this. And I dont want to scare you. You are doing the right thing. Please keep us informed as to what the doctor advises. I have read that Xanax use in pregnancy can cause Cleft lip/palate. All things considered, that is not bad. I'll be thinking of ya.
PLZ talk to your doctor ASAP .It is very dangerous to CT off of benzos it can cause sezuires .It also could put your body into shock and cause miscarriage .The doctor will help you taper off of it the safest was possible of both you and the baby.
PLEASE don't quit cold turkey!!!
I was a xanax addict and I was put on Lyrica when it first came out and it worked WONDERS. I had no withdrawal symptoms whatsoever.
Look into Lyrica and whether it's safe during pregnancy. Xanax is NOT safe to be taking during pregnancy. If your doctor is telling you to abruptly stop- go to another doctor, because that's not right dude.
Benzo withdrawals are no joke and if you quit taking Xanax abruptly you can go into early labor. In your case your baby would not survive. Please keep taking the xanax until you can see a doctor and properly wean off of it.
I am sorry I really don't have answers for you especially since you are pregnant. I would really recommend talking to your doctor about this.... being 100% honest about how you feel without the meds. Of course you don't want to harm the baby....but please talk to your doctor! Also, we have an OB/GYN RN on the forum you can send her a PM at 1234betterlife and she may be able to help you! Congrats on the baby! JoAnn
