Help for my husband.....

Hello All, I have been taking my husbands oxy and now he is without and having withdrawals. The doc said he could not refill his narcotic and put him on Ultram. I feel bad because I caused all of this and he needs his meds. Will the ultram keep him from having withdrawals if he takes enough....what a horrible wife I am!!!

yes, the tramadol(ultram) will help but very little when you compare it to oxy's.tramadol is not a synthetic opiate or a narcotic but works on the same receptors as hydros.why it's not cosidered an opiate is beyond me,i've heard horror stories about this drug

Hi Jenn.I wasn't familiar with your situation and I always like to have a little bit of knowledge about someones situation before I comment on their post.I saw that you posted in October of last year that your husband was consuming large amounts of vicodin and oxy and had run out resulting in an explosive dangerous situation for your husband, you and your child. You never updated as to whether or not your husband had gotten his problem under control.I'm hoping that he did but just cautioning you the fact that he has abused his pain meds in the past puts him at a higher risk for potential of abusing the ultram.Try and encourage him to  take the ultram only as it is prescribed. You wouldn't want him to end up in the same situation as carriekeegan has described.Congrats on your clean time from oxy's.I will keep you and your family in my prayers. All the best...Kim

Thanks everyone. I was using my husbands pills so that made him run short for the month. He can't support both of us with his one perscription. I just feel really bad because I caused this. The doc gave him 120 - 50mg ultram for 1 week!!!!! Sounds like he should be able to hold the WD's at bay. As for me...no oxy in weeks....feel great...well, besides my sinus problems but that's for another board....

I agree with you and I have heard that trams are horrible to come of off.  Switching addictions is not the way to go.  Good luck with your taper and your little bundle of joy. Keep posting!

PS I guess in short the answer is, yes it will keep withdrawl at bay....However I hope he uses this info. to hold him off so he can go through a planned detox. I understand sometimes because of financial obligations you cant just walk into detox today. No, You are not a bad wife. Try to be suportive and help him to take the ultram in moderation. I believe the highest recomended dose is 2, 4 times a day. But dont take my word follow the Dr recomendations. He should come clean with his Dr. Thats what hes there for, and Im sure its not the first time hes heard this!!! His Dr. may then recomend a even higher dose to taper off . Dependent on how many oxys he was taking!

I have MUCH exp. with ultram.  About a year ago I entered detox and the dr. in the detox unit realized I need something for pain, so he put me on ultram, not good!! I had been in detox for 4 days prior to taking the ultram. The next day I was ready to go, I felt GREAT! I thought I had completed my withdrawl. This was a poor choice on my dr. behalf, he told me it was not adictive. When my script for ultram ran out I started to feel real bad withrawl again and had to enter detox AGAIN!!!! My point is, yes, they keep away withrawl (at double the dose for me I was on percocet prior to ultram). However, they are very adictive I went through a worse withdrawl because I had not ever felt a true detox before!! I was taking about 30 pills a day at my worst!! I was very upset and discouraged to find out how long it takes to feel "normal". Please be careful, he shouldnt switch adictions just to keep withdrawl away....it has to happen sometime, now is always better than later. Right now I am taking ultram and tapering off slowly because I'm pregnant. I think this baby is going to save my life. This is prob. the only thing that would make me quit. I WILL NOT put my baby in danger!!! Lot's of luck!!!keep me updated

Sorry, my reply was meant for jen.

Yes, Jen, the 5 mg's will help w/the w/d's. He might have to take a few at a time, but they will help. If he says trhey won't, he is just looking for a buzz.

Been there, done that.

Glad you didn`t yell at me, haha. I am confused, I thought he just ran out cause you were taking them. Does he take them completely as prescribed. I am not positive about the ultram, someone else can answer that, but i think they would help, it is a synthentic opiate.

We have told you many many times with pills in the house it will be so much harder to do this. I read your other post and you know you can`t use recreationally, it does not work like that. Since your stealing his pills, don`t you think it`s time to come up with a better plan and end this cycle. I don`t mean this rude at all, but nothing changes if nothing changes and your torturing yourself right now, look at the all the bad it`s causing. I was stuck in that cycle for years, it`s tough to break, but if you want it bad enough you will do it. Stay strong Jen!

The vicoden you now have will help with his wds, please be careful with those too.

I take my boyfriends oxys and we run out every month or are paying up to $2,000 a month to support his habit and mine.  It has caused many arguements and now I've been on them for a year trying to get off of them so I can do something better with our money.  It's a horrible habit to get into honey and you should try to get off them while you can, or else you will both be going through withdrawals and feeling even worse than you are now.  I'm sorry but I know nothing about ultram.  Norcos helped keep the withdrawals at bay but after being on oxy didn't do much for pain.  You're not a horrible wife.  Oxy's are a horrible drug.  Be careful.
