Hospital Detox or Suboxone

HI,

I've been addicted to codeine and I've been to a drug specialist they have suggested I have two options, that I do a 1 week in hospital detox or I can take the substitute Suboxone (buprenorphine), which would be on about a month.

I'd like to hear about some peoples experience about either one and if they would recommend one or another. I would like to make a decision by this Thursday and I have another appt with the doctor.

I have yet to tell my partner about my addiction problem so if I do go to hospital I will also need to tell them about the addiction, which I guess I will need..

Any advise I would love to know.

Thanks

You are in a tricky situation.  I think you should tell your partner about this in any case, just to be honest.  She is investing everything in you and deserves to know you are going through this.  You can't build a relationship on dishonesty.  If she doesn't understand then you don't really want to be serious with her, I hope.

My situation is I just finished 10 days of inpatient treatment for Opana ER.  That went fine.  I tapered for 4 months before inpatient tx, and the anxiety got so bad that I couldn't taper any more.  I left the hospital on subs.  I feel like I am addicted to subs now.  And I have just gotten off the phone with a doctor at the treatment center asking whether I should come back to get off the subs.  He said he wants me to try tapering first.  So I am processing this info. now.  I thought I would be headed on the plane and back to the tx center.  That is how concerned I am.

The drug I just tapered from is an incredibly difficult drug.  People die from Opana all the time.  So perhaps I have needed this time on suboxone, and it may have been detrimental to detox any other way.  But, I have been on Opana a LONG time.  So being on subs for a while is understandable.  I also have pain issues, and subs helps with pain.  So, I will never know if suboxone has been an important part of my detox.

I don't think you should take your addiction any less seriously than I take mine.  You speak as if you can mention it to your partner.  So why don't you talk about it.  Then perhaps try tapering without anything, which is less risky, but have the doctor monitor you.  If that doesn't work, and your insurance will pay, it is much less risky to go to treatment and to not get on subs.

I say, we both have to be very grateful we have the option of going to treatment.  Most people that post here would LOVE that option.

If there is anything about my experiences you want to talk to me about, feel free to private message me anytime.

I wish you the best in your discussion with her and in your recovery.

Marie

Go to detox. there's no other way to get clean. really clean. subs. well the name is sub. and your subbing one opiate for another. i know lots of people on subs who wish they've never started subbing. if i can get clean from oxycontin. a potent drug three times as powerful than vikes or tram .......

Im just saying detox. yes its h e l l...but its the only natural way in my opinion...and you want to be free right

I don't know your entire situation, but I was wondering if by chance you could just take the time off from work and detox at home. It is just a thought. We are all different so what works for you may not work for me. I was just thinking that since you stopped the tram and haven't been on the codeine very long, with the support of your partner you may be able to kick this at home. Of course, if you have children and other responsibilities it may be better to go to a detox so you can concentrate on getting better without added stress. Based on what I've read here, since I have no experience with subs, I understand they can help but are used when other methods haven't worked and for those who have had long-term addiction, and you also have to taper off of them. Whatever way you choose to go, know we will be here to support you!

Hey,

I was abusing tramdol for about 9 months off & on over about a 1 and a half period.

But I have been clean from Tramdol since October 2011 and this is where Codeine come into play. I've only been addicted for about 5 months.

Hi,
One of my prior attempts at quitting vicodin, I checked into a rehab and they put me on Suboxone.  I don't know if it was suppose to, but those pills made me high, maybe even higher then the vicodin.  There were also a lot of side effects.  When I left the rehab, (I was only there for a week detox) I did research on the suboxone and found several people struggling with an addiction to that.  For me it felt like I was just trading one pill for another.  I ended up just throwing the suboxone out.  But then I ended up back on vicodin.  Looking back, I wish I could have just went into a rehab and not been put on anymore drugs, just let the withdrawal run it's course, in a supportive place, with no stress or ability to get pills.  I think that may have been more effective for me. This is just my personal experience though. Good luck to you:)

Hey. So I see how your appt went. Please remind me if before the codeine you only did the tramadol right? How long did you do the tram? The subs are better suited for someone with a longer history of opiate abuse.
