Hydrocodone withdrawal

Hi everyone,
Last time I logged in has been a long time ago when I was going through Valium withdrawal.  I have been on Lortab for 3 years now and I asked the doctor the other day if it could cause my mood swings, anger and frustration.  He said he had never heard any one complain of that before and decided to change my medication from Lortab to Oxycodone.  I didn't really want that but he said it was a real low dose short lasting one so I said okay.  Well, I took Lortab the morning before I picked up the new prescription because I was going to do pool exercises and need something for the pain.  I picked up the Oxycodone before going home and took one that afternoon and one that evening and did fine.  Keep in mind it was 7 AM that morning that I took the last lortab (2 7.5/325).  The next morning I woke up having horrible back and leg pain so I took one of the Oxycodone (5mg/325) it didn't touch the pain!  So an hour and a half later I took another half of one.  It still did not take away the pain but made me wake up gasping for breath like 4 or 5 times as I would dose off to sleep!  I have had 2 other drugs do that to me.  I have what they say is mild COPD so I don't know if the medicine slowed my respiratory system down so much it caused me to stop breathing or what.  I called my doctor's office to tell him and ask to be put back on the Lortab since it does not effect me that way and still does help with the pain.  He said no!  This is the same doctor who let me go through that horrible valium withdrawal.  He said I have to go see my pcp doctor first and have the breathing problem checked out because he doesn't think it's the drug that caused it!  I told them I am almost out of Lortab and he still said I had to see the pcp first.  I wound up in the ER that night because I had been having trouble breathing all day and my chest felt tight with some pain and I was dizzy.  I had a major anxiety attack in the ER where I could not get my breathing to go to normal and I was in a panic.  I was crying with make up running down my face.  They took blood, EKG, and an x-ray and said they all were good.  By the time the ER doctor came in there I had calmed down some.  I tried to explain what had happened with the change of drugs and he said I was an addict!  He said I would have to go into a detox center to get off of the Lortab which he said was herion!  I am terrified of the withdrawal that is looming since my medicine is about to be gone.  I already started into withdrawal Sunday and Monday after going 36 hours without the Lortab that is why I wound up in the ER.  My doctor and the pharmacist both told me I would not go into withdrawal from the Lortab if I was on the Oxycodone but they were wrong!  He told me the same thing about the valium if I took the Klonopin I would not withdrawal and he was wrong there to.  I am so upset right now I don't know what to do.  The ER doctor told me that if I went into a detox center they would take me off of it cold turkey and might put me in a medically induced coma for 3 days!  I am terrified right now!  I am going into see a pcp doctor tomorrow that I have never even met since my other one moved.  If he doesn't help me I don't know what I will do.  Is it true that you can't taper off of hydrocodone?  I did with the valium.  I had to go back on the valium and then my pcp weaned me off of it and it took 4 months and then I still had some lingering symptoms but they finally went away.  I was only on the valium for 14 months and have been on the Lortab for 3 years at 6 a day.  Can any one here please help me with some information?  I'm about to go crazy!  Thanks for listening to me ramble.

God bless you all and your families too.

It sounds like you need to find a new doctor. Let me tell you this, I went to the cheapest detox center around and they gave me meds to get me through withdrawals. I was coming off Methadone, but it really did help. The way I see it, if you take pain medication your not automatically an addict, but if you constantly run out and take more and more you probably are. Either way a detox center might be a good thing.
