I sooo agree with ZJILLIAN about.. in that sometimes the pain madication is making the pain worse....I found that after I got OFF the Norco my PAIN was LESS.. and that I could LIVE with it.. It just takes some time...

One thought is to come up with some really good pain assessment and management. To figure out what helps, and what doesn't. Depression is so complicated and chronic pain alone is enough in itself to push you into that black hole.
There is a pain management forum on MedHelp you could give that a look too. There are also people on this site in your situation, some have found that the pain medication was making the pain worse. Read the other posts on this site.
It seems to me that what you are trying to do makes a lot of sense. To get back to point zero with your pain meds, get through withdrawal, and see where you are. I think it also helps with the marriage because it makes things manageable when there is a plan in place, a direction. The partner always feels so helpless and then frustrated.
