I agree with on one of the other posters that you should start to wean yourself off one of the drugs first.

Of course, you are aware that being under the direction of a physician would have been the preferred choice to help you.  But as you are not able to get medical supervision and want to do it yourself, I would advise on gradually reducing the Tramadol first.  Not the two drugs at the same time.

Dropping from a dose of 10 or 11 tablets a day to 4 a day seems too drastic a drop.  If you are going to taper off, it is better to drop 1 tablet off for a week or so and steady decrease by one each time.  That way there won't be such a shock to your system.

I was prescribed with Tramadol and was so ill with taking just 1 tablet I was advised by my doctor and the chemist to stop taking it immediately.

You may find that getting counselling and learning relaxation and breathing techniques may help you.

Welcome Kevin; so glad you are here and wanting to get clean.  I'm not familiar with the Trams except what I've read on here; clean_in_kansas gave you great advice.
I did cold turkey off the opiates; but I'm currently tapering off Benzos.  I was taking Xanax and my new dr switched me to Ativan which is a slower acting benzo.  It's been tough at times, but worth it.
It sounds like you have a good plan in place.  Keep posting and sharing; there is always someone who has been where you are.  This forum is great for support, advice, and everyone is genuinely caring.  It's been a lifesaver for me.

Welcome to the forum, Kevin!!  So glad you have decided it's time to make a change.  You're so right....prescription drugs will steal all of life's beauties from us and turn us into people we never intended to become.

I'm guessing that since you are asking how to do this without a doctor, that you don't get your pills from a dr?  Or you supplement from elsewhere?

Having gotten off of 3 drugs at one time....I'd share with you that you may need to do this one drug at a time.  The Tramadol/Ultram is, as you may already know, a totally synthetic opioid.....it also has an antidepressant component in it which adds to the complexity of a straight opiate w/drawal.
It is safest and best....of course to taper Trams down.....but I DO know of a very dear woman that simply had to cold turkey them.  She was taking WAY MORE per day than you....and she is almost a year clean now :)  You need to take it one drug at a time.  The benzo will be equally as difficult to w/draw from as the Tramadol.  They BOTH can cause seizures if not weaned/tapered...that's simply the truth and nature of those beasts.  But you can do it....equip yourself...learn and read all you can.  I COMMEND you for wanting to do this for YOURSELF...and also for your new blessing/your new son.  It will be something you will never regret.  It's VERY hard.....but DOABLE.

I thought I'd share a link with you.  It's where a lot of Tram Warriors here on MedHelp share their experience, strength and hope...their struggles...their relapses...their "I can do this"..."this is EXACTLY what I'm going thru"...kinda stuff.   A forum member started a journal  way back in 2008 when she got free of tram poison (as she calls it).  Those journals are still going strong.....they are on "part 60" I believe.  Here ya go:

Hope you'll tell us more about yourself.  There are lots of us that have been down the road you find yourself on about now.  We are all scared to quit...and scared NOT to quit.  But we hold the key to our own freedom.
Blessings to you~

As others state, Tramadol needs to be tapered and you really need to be under a physician's. I had been prescribed Tramadol years ago and it was a nightmare on Elm Street. With opiates I believe self-tapering is reasonable. With Tramadol, the possibility of seizure when alone is very real, even with tapering. It would be rough if you live alone and this happened. Plus youbare on several prescription meds. I really truly believe you need a physician's real-time input.

Hi Kevin, and welcome. Tramadol needs to be tapered. There is a risk of seizure if you quit cold turkey. We are not allowed to give you specific tapering schedules, as we are not doctors and don't know your medical history, etc, but slow and steady drops are key. It seems like you have a good plan. You will still feel some withdrawal symptoms. Please check out the Thomas Recipe, the link is at the bottom of the page, for things you can do to help lessen the symptoms.  Please keep posting with any questions you may have or if you need some support. This is a wonderful place for both. Take care!

Hi Kevin . Good job on posting your own thread . There will be plenty of people who will help with your particular question now.  Yes Dropping very slowly over a long period of time is a viable option to getting free. I could never seem to be able to taper though . Best wishes to you and welcome ;)
