I want to add:
I've been researching for days and everything I have read says do not because it may cause miscarriage but I do not want to harm my baby
This should tell you right there that what we're saying is true. Your risk for m/c is high dear...you're worrying about defects I'm sure...the truth is, what you're doing is really running the risk of losing your entire pregnancy. The risk of opiates during pregnancy is mainly w/ds at birth, which can be safely managed.
Here is a description of the pregnancy risk categories:
Category A
Adequate and well-controlled studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus in the first trimester of pregnancy (and there is no evidence of risk in later trimesters).
Category B
Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.
Category C
Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
Category D
There is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on adverse reaction data from investigational or marketing experience or studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
Category X
Studies in animals or humans have demonstrated fetal abnormalities and/or there is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on adverse reaction data from investigational or marketing experience, and the risks involved in use of the drug in pregnant women clearly outweigh potential benefits.
Category N
FDA has not classified the drug.
Subutex is a category C drug as far as risk goes. That's a middle of the road medication. Categories D and above are where the REAL risk lies.
Absolutely follow your doctor's instructions. Dropping from 16mg to 4mg is a HUGE drop, it might as well be cold turkey quitting, it's VERY significant. You're putting yourself at risk for a m/c.
Docs don't FULLY understand how ANY med affects the unborn child...there are no guarantees, but they do know enough to know how to guide you, and you should not be going against their advice. In my own opinion, doing what your doing is MUCH more potentially harmful than the advice your doctors gave you. They have already done everything typical for a woman who finds out she's pregnant while on Sub, including switching you to Subutex. While again there are no guarantees, there HAVE been a good number of women who have stayed on Sub throughout their entire pregnancy, the biggest issue being w/ds in the baby.
PLEASE listen to your doctors...don't think you know better sweetie..they are truly the ones who do. Best of luck to you!
Yes it's true I have no idea what's going on inside of me. I'm considering trying to find a place I can go stay where they could monitor the baby while I detox, if such a thing even exists. But very true I wouldn't be able to know on my own how it's being affected. Thanks for all your help
All you can do is your best sweetie...just keep in mind that everything you do and don't do affects the unborn child...It's great to go by your instincts so just be sure the doctor knows you've tapered back to 4 mgs. You may feel fine with that but who knows how a huge drop like that will effect a fetus. That's why it's always recommended that a physician be aware of what you're doing. That has to be our position here...
There ARE women who have been through the forum who have delivered healthy babies while on Subutex. I don't remember names but you can do a search...
Even my doctors themselves are very quick to admit that they don't know much about the effects this drug has during pregnancy....but I will try my hardest to follow all medical advice
The Hippocratic Oath states, in part; First of all, do no harm. I would go with a Doc that you are comfortable with....be safe.....
I have been taking 4 mg daily and am doing fine with it. I do trust my doctors I know they are medically trained and trying to do what's best for me and my baby. I just can't help thinking how harmful this can be to him or her during their most important developmental stage :(
That is all the more reason for you to follow their advice. Don't you trust them? Do you think they would tell you to do something that could harm your baby? By your tapering on your own will cause much more harm, potentially.
Go and talk with the doctor and ask them to explain all of this. 16 mg is NOT a small amount for anyone. Even tapering back 1 MG is a lot with this drug.
Yes I know this may not be the best place for advice in this situation I really just hoped a mother who had been through it could share their own experience but I do appreciate all opinions it is helpful either way
Thank you....I know even this small amount is a not so small amount especially to my tiny baby who did not ask for this. Doctors don't want you quitting till second trimester but first trimester is when the most important growing takes place when everything is formed. That is my reason for wanting to go against medical advice..
You ARE taking a high dose so you really need to work with the doctor. Tapering is just not that safe on your own...Subutex is not like other opiates(and it is an opiate) so you need to tread very carefully with it.
This is a great forum for support and general info but not for this sort of medical advice. Please don't think you can taper any amount of mgs...it just doesn't work that way with this drug...
Please be aware that Sub is a microgram medication prescribed in MILLIGRAM amounts for maintenance - - Even a couple milligrams is a large dose. Check out The Suboxone Talk Zone with a Doc Jeff Junig - - he has been there and back!
I actually hadn't thought of that! It may be safer for me since I'm not taking such a high dose. I will talk to my doctors my next apt thank you!
I would go with what the docs say. If you tell them what you've tapered down to maybe they'd be more likely to have you quit? I don't know anything about that specific med but did have to quit tramadol when 7-8 weeks pregnant about 4 years ago.
It is prescribed to me and my doctors are advising me not to quit though I have tapered myself down taking much less than prescribed already because I don't feel 16 mg a day is really necessary. I was just hoping to hear from someone in a similar situation that successfully quit. I appreciate your comment thank you!!
Hi there~ Where are you getting Subutex? This should be prescribed by a doctor who is aware of your condition. That doctor should then be working closely with your OB.
Do not stop cold turkey... It's dangerous and never advised. So, my advice is to follow your doctor's instruction and good luck to you both.
