Seeing a LSW, psychiatrist or a psychologist etc?

I have an appointment next week with a LSW as part of my recovery, I am also back on suboxone after a brief replapse.  I was wondering of those of you who do see "someone" for your aftercare, what type of person do you talk to?  Since this will be my first time I am not sure if seeing a social worker is pretty typical or not.  I am not the kind of person who can open up easily to people so I want to make sure I am going to the best person.  I was also wondering if there are any na/aa meetings online that any of you may know about?  Thanks in advance & Happy Halloween = ).

Also, I saw him about 20 years ago for some other issues.  I think he was surprised to see me again!!!  This time for different reasons, but I know I'm in good hands!  When you meet your therapist, you'll be able to tell if it's a right fit or not.  Most of the time, they are very good at making the fit work.

You'll do fine hun.  My social worker is very good at asking the right questions to bring it out of me.  I was amazed at how much I shared on my first visit.  I've been clean a little over 50 days and I just started seeing him this past Wednesday.  I think it'll be positive.  I know it will help me stay clean!!!

I always had the best luck with a psychotherapist. They are trained to do 'talk' therapy...they do not prescribe meds.  A psychiatrist can prescribe but isn't really trained to do 'talk' therapy.  I've never heard of a social worker trained to do any kind of therapy....my mom had her degree and was a social worker.  I'm not sure a scocial worker can do much more than listen and report that you are doing well...or not.  I could be wrong.

Thanks - I am very relieved to hear this.  As I mentioned I have a hard time telling other people about my problems etc. so this is going to take some getting used to.  Have a great weekend!

P.S.  are you on suboxone as well or just doing the follow up after getting clean, if i may ask?

My therapist is also an LSW which is a social worker.  They are licensed to do therapy.  They can specialize in all sorts of mental health issues.  Mine just happens to deal with family counselling as well as addictions.  I think a social worker will be fine!  :)
