What Damage do the drugs do during multiple surgeries& in ICU

After many surgeries 40+ and in ICU what damage has occured.  Newbe here but I haven't seen that dicusion kicked around.  Surely they do damage along with opiates for pain after the surgery.  Could they help the lessen time to become addicted/dependent.  What effect do they have on addiction.  Surely these chemicals are very addictive?

Thanks!

Hi - Im not sure what you mean.  Do you mean anesthesia during surgery-- like what damage does the anesthesia cause?  What chemicals do you mean?  I think that with 40+ surgeries you must have had major pain issues and thats how you became dependent/addicted.  Lots of people became addicts after taking meds for legit reasons (Im not one of them though).

YES, The anestesia, and the pre-OP meds that are given. Also the short acting stuff for epidural.  Sometimes I was under for 6 or eight hours.  There have been so many I should have asked.  Also I had so many surgeries they had to use other meds to put me under.  My tolerence has become so great I have to tell them before any more surgeries to have extra anesthesia on hand.  Maybe it is just me but this patteren seems to have done damage far worse than just the opiate addiction.  I was hoping to find some consensus from others with multiple surgeries and pain med addiction

Alaskan Brown Bear almost killed me plus other accidents.

OH wow.  So sorry for what you've gone through.  Its a good question.  I cant answer though but would be curious to know. Seems likely that yeah, all that surgery and the really strong anesthesias etc could definitely have some negative effect.  Plus depression for having endured so much on top of everything.. all that could lead to a severe addiction.  Hopefully someone can come along with more knowledge.   Maybe try the pain management forum, or doctors forum.. probably more likely to find people there with multiple surgeries.. Keep us posted though.  Congrats on being 9 days AS.  I am 125 AS!

For this one I would seriously say to go to the addiction expert forum and ask SubDoc Jeff - He is an anasthesiologist and he has experience with the fentanyl, versed, and other meds that should concern you.

Thank you! New to this forum, so I have to find my way around still.  I will follow your advice.  Several Anaesthesiologist have complained about my tolerance and being able to wake up and thrash during surgery.  Will be good to hear what the expeets have to say!

Thanks again!
