What to do? I'm taking anywhere from 6-10 Lortabs Each Day

I have a collapsed bone in my foot and my doctor prescribes me Lortab 10/500, 90 a month. A family member of mine gets 90 Lorcet 10/650 a month, and I find myself getting into their medicine as well as taking mine. Another family member of mine takes Methadone 10mg tablets and I've even slipped some of them before and took them. Obviously I'm getting out of control. I have suffered for years with pain, and it's getting to where Lortab doesn't even help me anymore. Someone please tell me what to do in order to slow down!

Morning Joe,, Short of checking yourself into a rehab program since I think your saying you can't seem to stop, you may want to discuss the matter with your doctor or an addiction counselor. The other thing you could do is have someone hold the pills for you and dispense them as written. But if you know where your family member has their's , the question you need to ask yourself is whether or not you could overcome the temptation to raid their bottle when you don't have yours, In that case the only way to stop that is to come clean with the family member so they put their pills up where you can't find them.

If you really are sick of them though, the only real way is to walk away for good. Go cold turkey and don't look back. Sounds harsh, but thats pretty close to reality..As if you don't, chances are your going to continue a rollercoaster pattern as that is the nature of the beast with 99% of the people that are here asking for help....Need to make a decision and stick to it.. Shouldn't be taking more than 8 max a day btw. Because of the tylenol content. Even then, its not recommended that an individual takes right at the 4000mg limit on a constant basis. each pill you have has 500mg in it. And no pill taking should exceed 1000mg in a 6 hour period (4000mg divided up by 24 hours) That can lead to kidney and liver problems in time That ought to scare you. There are a number of members in here that have irreversible damage due to doing that. And when an individual gets to that point, if you ever need more pain medication, hospitals or doctors won't give it to you because it could kill you..Your organs have lost the capability to process the toxins out. Once your internals are "pickled", thats it,,end of story.

Maybe think of all the reasons "it would" be in your best interest to stop. For your own personal health and well being...

Dave said it best but I'll add that there are opiate pain meds without any tylenol or aspirin in them.  If you really need pain management, then working with your physician is best.  When on pain meds or withdrawing, pain is usually intensified.  I think you would be surprised that after stopping your pain meds and just taking a Motrin, how much more manageable your pain really is.

Thank you all for your advice. I have been raised in a Christian home all my life and I'm even an ordained minister within my community of faith. Just recently married over a year ago, and have a 6 month old baby girl. I know I have to stop for the very sake of all this leading to health problems in the future and for the sake of my family. I've taken Lortab for years. I started out buying them from a cousin of mine, then I stopped for a long time, but me being over weight and the collapsed bone in my foot the pain nearly keeps me from being able to walk unless I use the cane the specialist prescribed to me. So I started back up about about 8 months ago and been on them ever since. I started out taking 3 a day, then it went from 3 to 6, and now it's 10 a day. Gosh this is so crazy! I know the Lord can help me get off these crazy old things --- and I'm thankful for forums such as these because people here can relate to what I'm going through instead of calling me a "pill popper, dope head, etc. etc" ... thank you all for your help and great advice.
