Pentazocine for back pain

My doctor prescribed Pentazocine for my chronic back pain several years ago.  He recently left the clinic I prefer and the new doctor I was assigned made a big deal about my usage of this drug.

She would only prescribe for three months and seemed to be really concerned.  I take three pills a day and they have made a big difference in my quality of life.  I am able to be more active and to get ot sleep at night.  Before I would have a couple of glasses of wine and three tylenol before bed.

Now I am worried.  Her concern has me wondering if there is more to be considered.  Does this drug affect my mental capacity?  Is it distroying my kidneys or liver?

What should I be concerned about in taking this drug, if anything?  I am 60 years old.  My back problems started with a compressed vertebrae.  I also have Spinal stenosis, scoliosis, arthritic spurs, and a ruptured disc.  Surgery is not an option according to the last specialist I saw. Although I was sent to a pain clinic and they recommended injections of cortisone.  The previous doctor said those often didn't work and cortisone scares me.

Any pain medication like you have can cause problems like addiction or high blood pressure to name some of the biggies, and i think the new doctor felt this medication was not right for you or she does not deal with chronic pain patients and giving pain medication for long periods. The way you sounded, you must have received 6 refills from your old dr and it sounds like the new dr may not refill after the 3 months. If you dont abuse your medication, than you should be safe the way you are prescribed. You may go to a second doctor and ask him about your medicine and the risks for peace of mind.
