About to go Cold Turkey but have a question

Ive been tapering and curious how close I am to being clean.  I know I will have WD but want to know how bad and how long.

Back story.
Im tapering down from 50mg x3 Oxy and at 30mg x3 (30 days).  But Ive cut way back myself.  Main reason for it, I had a really bad injury and 30 mg didn’t bring relief so I had to take extra.  Since I would be short the last 2 weeks Ive been cutting down.
Past 5 days Ive only been taking a half (guessing that’s 15mg) with 5mg perks in between (6-8).  The perks really helped with managing WD.
5 days before that taking 30mg x1.  But I cut them into quarters.  Assuming that’s bad to do but its what I did.  Had to take a quarter before bed to sleep and then a quarter to help with WD to get out of bed in morning.  That left me half for rest of day
5 days before that was at 1 30mg and a half.

I have about 10 5mg perks left and only 1 30mg Oxy and a half.  Im going to run out.
Since Ive cut way down and last 5 days only had 15mg Oxy per day should the WD be bad?
I understand my method isn’t sound but knowing Im going to be short Im doing best to reduce the WD Im going to have.

Im hoping the WD wont be bad since Im basically off the Oxy.  Also have the Clondine patch.  Will put that on when I get home.  I did this to myself by taking too many when I was in severe pain.
Im hoping I can manage and function without having to miss work.  Worried about pain once Im off but I cant keep up this routine with the pills.  Always low by month end and then start cycle all over.  Ill be out of pill by tomorrow (Tuesday).  Hoping I've wound down enough to manage this.  Any chance that by weekend Ill be on the upward swing with minimal WDs?

Oh yeah, could Ultram help me continue to wean down?  I have about 20 of those from before.  Or is that only adding to it?

Okay...Throw out the Ultram. It's bad. Throw out the rest of the pills,as well. Just get this done now. You will feel much better by then of the week.

The whole process is not about the withdrawals and how bad they are. It's about getting clean from drugs. There is no way around it,magic cure or anesthesia. Withdrawing will not kill you If you prepare for it it's actually not too bad.

Read the health pages. There's good info in there!

You said you cut down to 15mg oxy a day which is great. But you have to realize you are still taking 30-40mg of percocet a day. Percocet is pretty much the same as oxycontin. They both are oxycodone with the oxy being extended release and the percocet being immediate release and also has acetaminophen. The thing is, since you cut the oxycontin it made it immediate release so you are getting it all at once just like the percocet. So in sense, you are taking about 55mg of percocet a day. You said the percocet have really helped in managing withdrawals and that is because it is really no different than the oxy. And like I mentioned before, since you have been breaking the oxycontin they are exactly the same except for the acetaminophen.
But the good news is, you have cut your dose back by about a third. This will help your withdrawals compared to going cold turkey off of 150mg. They should not be near as intense now. I think the worst of your withdrawals will be over within a week but some minor symptoms may linger for a couple weeks but should be completely bearable. Everyone is different though. Just start taking the supplements from the amino acid protocol right away. Also be sure to exercise, eat healthy, and push the good fluids. This will make things extremely easier and more than likely make your withdrawals manageable. What I would do is try your hardest to stretch your doses out from what you have left. I once tapered very low and the last few days I would try and go as long as I could to take one even if it was every other day. Save the rest of the percocet for that since they are a bit weaker. If you can drag it out as long as you can you may get by with little to no withdrawals. Many people say just to go cold turkey and get it over with which I have done. I have also tapered and in my opinion it makes it so much easier. But, no everyone can taper. When tapering you have to remember that if you feel a buzz, you are taking too much. You just want to take enough to make life somewhat bearable. You won't feel completely great but will also be able to continue on with everyday life.
Your story is a lot like mine. I ended up taking too many due to pain which turned in to addiction. I got so sick of running out and having withdrawals for a week I finally said enough is enough. That monthly cycle was horrible. Hey, I guess we know what women have to go through every month!
Do not mess with the ultram. Type tramadol in the search here on medhelp and browse through some of the horror stories. It also has antidepressant properties so you end up having withdrawals from that too.
We can't post taper schedules on the open forum so if you want to taper down further, send me a message and I can help you out with some ideas with what you have left.
Congrats on wanting your life back. It is worth every second of the pain we have to endure to get there.
Best of luck to you! It will feel great when you are finally free from the counting, the guilt of taking too many, the anxiety from running low, etc. The list goes on and on!
Hang in there buddy. You will make it through.

Thanks! I will send you a message once I figure out how to with the iPhone. I know the perks aren't really helping.  Only had 4 today spread out.

I need to get the amino acid plan and start doing that.  This website is not easy to search from iPhone so might take time.
But thank you.  I hate the cycle and the wd that come with it. Really trying to get clean

Good luck Ballgame,

You've done really well so far and congratulations on you're brave decision.

I hope you managed to flush the ultram (tramadol). It really can be even worse to get off than other opiates. Also, please make sure you don't have any secret or 'emergency' stashes left around the house.

You've tapered well, so you may be over the worst by the weekend, but you certainly won't be back to normal- so just stick in there, it's worth it.

You probably already know this from other posts on the list, but the natural amino acid 5HTP can help with withdrawal symptoms, especially anxiety. Also Valerian tincture will help you sleep at night, and you can also take it during the day if you get stressed out.
Both are non-habit forming and you can get them from any good healthfood shop or online.
Otherwise do remember to drink lot's of fresh cold water (with ice if you have it) and plenty of fresh orange juice. Go for a walk in the fresh air at least once a day- otherwise put on your favourite DVD- it's a good distraction. (A personal favourite of mine is 'The Last Waltz'- you can just lose yourself in those classic rock performances!)

When it get hard, just get back on here and scream, shout and swear at us. We can take it!

Wishing you the very best of luck,

Take care

Thanks for kind words.  I'm freaked out because I feel fine. I took a multipurpose vitamin from gnc and must have blocked my receptors or something.  I feel
tired but no wd.  Really wierd and probably shouldn't jinx myself.  Been 18 hours but I know 2nd day is worse than the 1st.
Printed the Thomas Recipe and will try that.  Is that different than the amino acid one?

Thanks all. So far so good

Oh yeah the clonadine patch is working.

Here is my goal. Besides being clean.  I want to be able to skip my next pain mgt apt and tell them to suck it. They helped me do this with no real way out. I'm the one who said it has to stop, not them cause I'm just a dollar sign to them.
It's 10 days away.

The clonadine will work wonders!!! I used that when I went inpatient to detox a few years ago.

Stay strong, you can do this! I am only on day 12 (had to start over from relapse, ugh!) so I am right there with you in this battle! I didn't use anything for the WD's this time. CT all on my own. So I understand what you are going through. We can do this...together!!!

20 hours and I don't feel any WD. This is nuts!! The clonadine patch plus the vitamins must be helping.  I know it's still early but this is good.
I've gone cold turkey before and have weaned way down.  I remember at about 60 hours I caved and got perks. Was awful!! That's why this is weird to me

Thanks Gnarly

well I'm on day 3 and feel good. No idea why because like I said I've tried this 3 times and had an awfu time.

I swear by GNCs Mega Men multipurpose vitamins.  It's like they block my receptors or something.   I really should be having WD.  Guess my wean down was good enough to give my body a chance to break away from Oxy

I'm a little tired but all is well

Wow,I am really happy for you! I guess those vitamins and the clonidine really are working. Also your great attitude is working wounders for you. I bet it feels great to know you are living a life free of opiates. And I agree with you about the pain managment drs. There are alot of cheating drs around this area. I dont know from personal experience but from others. They want to keep people addicted so they will always come back and pay for appointment. But you outsmarted them!!! Keep it up nad Im soo happy for you!

I was jsut wondring if someone could help me on this question. I am 24 weeks pregnant and have been taking2 vicadon a day for about 2 months. I know it is not a lot but I still feel crappy if I don't take it. I am done taking this medication as of this am but have seen some posts that u should not quit cold turkey as it is not good for the baby. Does anyone know if this is true or had similar exp. My OB doc doesn't even know I am taking them as he is not the prescriber. I am kind of scared to say something but will definatly if it is harmful to my baby. Thank you for any suggestions

No the vicodin wont hurt the baby, but it is defenitly better not to take them. My dotor prescribed me Vicodin for my back pain while I was pregnant. he told me it was safe to take through my whole pregnancy, but at any dose you will want to wuit before the baby is born so that the baby doesnt suffer withdrawals outside of the womb. You should stop @ 7 or 8 months. I was taking 6 vicodina  day my whole pregnancy prescribed my doctor and quit a 32 weeks and my baby is fine.

Where do you get clonodine?

My pain mgt dr prescribed the Clonidine patch.  It's made for blood pressure but has other agents that help with mild withdrawal. Keeps you from getting the runs and helps you eat.

My wife was told not to take vics while pregnant.  If you can stop would be a good idea.  Not telling you what to do but seems like too much risk

Please do not stop taking your meds at any time during your pregnancy unless you have seen and been advised by your OB first!  Continuing to take them won't harm your baby, but going cold turkey from a high dose certainly can.

Now I know you're on a very low dose, so it would probably be OK, but it isn't worth the risk.

Check with your doctor first.

Take care

Sorry, Ballgame; I missed your post!
I'm feeling great at 14 days!
How are you doing?! Still no WD's?! I wouldn't complain about that too much!
Hope all is well on your end! ;)

Thanks for all the opinions crazy that they r so different. I have actually felt pretty good today just a little stomach upset. I am going to call my ob to talk about it htough. All different dr's have different opinions. Half will say yes u can take vicodin and half will say you can't. I definatly can stop taking them and I am just don't want the baby to feel any withdrawals I have googles this but not finding any answers if the baby can feel w/d in the womb??? That is my main concern not so much that I took the pills. I would do nothing to harm my baby I had a terrable painful infected cyst on the inside of my leg and they had to keep cutting into it. The only reason I took them in the first place. I will keep everyone updated. Thanks again

The concern is not that the baby can feel withdrawal in the womb, it is that withdrawal in the mother can cause miscarriage.

As I said, in your case it is probably unlikely, since your dose is so low.

But I would urge you not to do it before you speak to your OB. It simply isn't worth the risk.

Take care
