Hi all
My dad too had rls until the last moment of his life. And it seams that my son, 9years old, could have the same symptoms because often before sleeping he is walking in bed.
I have periods free on symptoms and other periods, like now, when sleeping is just a dream. I have other neurological conditions too: Arnold Chiari malformation and Benign fasciculation syndrome. Recently, on the 19th of December 2011 I had the strongest pain in my life. On Sunday the 18th my mum cames from Italy and I help her with her luggage that gave same mild lower back pain. On the 19th I went to work as usual without any problem but once back home suddenly a pain appear on my right thigh that grown of intensity so that after 15 minutes or half an hour I was just screaming. My wife called the after hours NHS service but of course their time and procedure are long and after a couple of hours still screaming without any rest with all my family worried and scared about it and no call back from the NHS my wife called the ambulance for the emergency and I was brought to the hospital. The paramedic of the ambulance gave me some gas to breath that gave some rest from the pain and the felling of making some jokes too. Unfortunately at the hospital after a very short check by the doctor I was sent home without any help but with a nice "if it is just pain you should not be here as this is only an emergency service". So went back home, the day after to my GP and I had Tramadol (4 per day), Amitriptyline ( 1 before sleep) and Dicoflenax 75 (2 per day). I was not able to walk for days and even sleep was difficult and for more than a week I could sleep only seat on a chair with a pillow on my leg, elbows on the pillow, my head in my hands. But I had no RLS until about 10 day ago. In January I had a couple of night when I slept for 12 hours without interruptions. As my osteopath said rls was possibly overshadow by the pain. Now I gave up those treatment as the pain is nearly gone although I lost mass/muscle in my right leg both thigh and calf. An the rls is back worse then before: in the last week I slept just few hours per night in fragmented time. I found that before the cocodemol was sometimes useful but not this time. My GP gave Diazepan that make me feel sleepy but I can't sleep because the symptoms on my legs are are at a stage I have never had before. I try to go to sleep always at the same time around 10 pm, don't drink coffees nor tea from around 5 pm. I do mild exercise (tai chi) quite regularly and also this morning it is already 4 am and I had no sleep. Could you give me any help? I read about the Brazilian research about the dopamine release by the body doing sex and in the last couple of nights I done some extra "self service" but it seams that it doesn't' work.  I noticed that the full  moon and weather conditions are effect on my symptoms. Thanks

Certain lifestyle changes and activities that may reduce symptoms in persons with mild to moderate symptoms include decreased use of caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco; supplements to correct deficiencies in iron, folate, and magnesium; changing or maintaining a regular sleep pattern; a program of moderate exercise; and massaging the legs, taking a hot bath, or using a heating pad or ice pack. A trial of iron supplements is recommended only for individuals with low iron levels. Although many people find some relief with such measures, rarely do these efforts completely eliminate symptoms.

Evidence indicates that low levels of iron in the brain also may be responsible for RLS.Certain medications that may aggravate symptoms. These medications include antinausea drugs (prochlorperazine or metoclopramide), antipsychotic drugs (haloperidol or phenothiazine derivatives), antidepressants that increase serotonin, and some cold and allergy medications-that contain sedating antihistamines.
also when people experience rls from substance withdrawal we suggest a magnesium/calcium/potassium supplement and also hylands restful leg tabs.
