are there similar blood pressure pills that i can take instead of those? I have alterolol (spelling?). I am also a smoker and not sure if its ok for a smoker to take blood pressure pills. Dont have a regular physician.

Clonidine is the only one i've come across that has shown to help with withdrawl (withdrawal).  I also read some place that it has also been used to help people quit smoking!  Probably the dry mouth side effect.

I'm using clonidine (ramping down on it) and smoke and have had no problems.  I even have a pacemaker and no problems

depends on what you were using and how long...I was using 7.5 vics..at the most 8-9 a day for 3 years (ramped up to that level over that period).  I was lucky as I started clonidine on day one and felt horrible that day before the clonidine and felt quite a bit better after taking it..I never really had it too bad, thankfully.  The clonidine made me sluggish and lethargic (and dry mouthed) but I never really had the horrible symptoms.

3-4 can be bad, but hang in there because the day will come soon..maybe by day 7 or 8 and you'll say "hey...I feel pretty darned good today!" and you're on your way.

I would NOT take any other blood pressure meds for this.. Clondine has been used for decades for withdrawals.. i would not supplement just any med for this.. if you really want it go to the ER or a urgent care center if you regular doc won't prescribe it..

Also i am a smoker and i took clondine. don't think that matters.. you just don't want to take it if you don't have hypertension.. it will make your BP too low
