I too have a pain doc, have for years, been on oxy for years, always got them legitimately through a prescription...and just like above, I hated that my life revolved around the little pills. I quit cold turkey 35 days ago. I've never tried subs, but there is A LOT of people on here that have and did and swore and warned and BEGGED others to NOT get on them as like even above, that it's 10x worse than opiate wd...PLEASE listen to that advice!!
You say your tolerance is higher and higher, do you take more than you are prescribed? are you ONLY getting oxy from your doctor? you said no street drugs, but was clarifying, are you getting oxy from other places to supplement your prescription? some folks will advise you to taper if you are staying within your allotment and slowly drop down, this will make the wd "easier"...but, after many failed attempts at tapering, I couldn't do it. I felt like I was stretching out the inevitable and always felt like crap instead of just making the jump and getting off for good. That was 35 days ago and it's been quite the journey. you will learn things about yourself that you never knew and you will see and feel firsthand the amount of toxic material in your body that opiates do to it, because that first week...yeah, all of those toxins come out..and it reeeeeeally, reeeeeeally stinks!! both literally and metaphorically speaking!
I worked full time and kept up with a hubby and kiddos during my wd, the ingredients in the Thomas Recipe helped me immensely (all natural products you can buy OTC at a grocery/supplement store). Total of about 50 bucks or so...hot baths with Epsom salts several times per day. You CAN get off the opiates, but it's a tough ride in the beginning.
Again, I urge you to research the sub's because I didn't use them personally but the consensus is just make the leap, and be done altogether!

Sub wd was 10x's worse than oxy for me. I went ct off all of my meds and the first 5 days were rough. I understand about the "always having pain" bc I am in the same situation. I quit due to I wanted to "feel" again. You can't die from opiate wd but you might hope you do. Just relax when you feel that way and remember after day 3 everyday will be a little better. Most will tell you ct is the way to go so that you don't prolong the wd. There are over the counter remedies that make wd a little more tolerable, look up the thomas recipe. Good luck.
