Is he getting Suboxone through a doctor? If so, he should be comminucating with the sub doctor every step of the way, and should've been honest with the hospital doctors about him being on Sub. Not being honest compromises his care...and obviously decreases accountability as he isn't being honest with himself since he was given his DOC. I'm assuming he had a genuine medical condition that required something as powerful as Dilaudid? Or, was he just drug seeking? How long has he been abusing Dilaudid? How long has he been on subs, and what dose was he on? Does he abuse the sub?
In order for him to be successful in his recovery, he's going to need to do a few things...one is being more honest with himself and other people, most importantly medical professional caring for him. If he's in a sub program, he needs to take full advantage of the program, be 100% compliant with all he's required to do, which would be to be forthcoming about any reason he would need to be on narcotics.
Most sub clinics will actually discharge a patient if they aren't honest about something like that. It's usually made very clear upon acceptance into a sub program that that if something comes up where a narcotic is legitimately needed, the sub clinic should be contacted ASAP, both for guidance (as normally, if not an emergency), the sub will be held for a few days before the narcotic is needed, in order for it to be effective...and also for accountability reasons. If he's not getting his sub through a clinic, and he's serious about recovery, then he needs to do that. Getting sub off the street is not optimal, and rarely results in long term success.
Lastly, aftercare is VITAL. That means counselling, NA/AA meetings, support from family/friends...he needs to eliminate any sources, and be sure that anyone he deals with in the medical profession has noted his addiction issues, so that he can be cared for properly...while at the same time, guarding his sobriety.
To answer your actual question...it's usually not so much a time frame to restart sub, but moreso intensity of w/d symptoms that is pertinent. If he didn't stop taking sub when he was started on Dilaudid, he very well could still have sub on board, which could prolong the start of w/ds. Typically, a person should be in moderate w/ds as per the COWS scale before sub is initiated. His best course of action would be to ask his sub doc to guide him on resuming the sub, so he does so the RIGHT way, without putting himself at risk for precipitated w/ds.
I wish your BF the best of luck.
Hi..If you just keep checking your post you will get a lot of people who have done the Subs or know somethings about it..I just want to know if he is under a Dr care for the Subs?? Also Openmind is right we are not Drs so he should be honest with the Dr..It will be so worth it in the long run..This could be moved to another site but they will let you know..So keep checking in OK..I wish you two the best.
He did not want to tell his doctor about it out of shame...he is being dicharged at this moment and says he is going to stay at my house...take his meds as perscribed with my help. Thank you
It sounds like he's in pain. He'd do much better asking his doctor at the hospital about that. We're not supposed to give medical advise here on this forum. But we would love to help him when he's ready to kick opiates and begin recovery. Support for quitting drugs is what we're all about.
